Falls Mill, W.Va. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has completed the installation of a state-of-the-art, all-access paddle craft launch at the scenic Falls Mill Recreation Area of Burnsville Lake.
The "Falls Mill All Access Paddle Craft Launch Ramp" project aimed to provide a safe and accessible entry point to the lake for everyone, regardless of age, physical ability, or experience level. This initiative, a partnership between the Burnsville Lake Corps office and the long-standing Friends of Burnsville Lake, was able to create what is being called a "one-of-a-kind
attraction" for the region.
"We want to give a safe opportunity for visitors of all ages, and those with physical limitations, a way to enjoy a relaxing day on Burnsville Lake," stated Brian Carson, the Corps Natural
Resource Specialist – Park Ranger, in the project proposal. "The main focus of this project is to add an ADA-accessible paddle craft launch to Burnsville Lake... to promote outdoor recreation for everyone."
The new facility features an EZ Dock EZ Launch System, specifically designed for accessibility. It includes a transfer bench system, handrails, and a gentle roller system, allowing individuals with disabilities, seniors, and children to safely and independently enter and exit their kayaks or canoes.
The project goes beyond just the launch ramp. Construction of a concrete walkway, two ADA-accessible picnic sites complete with tables, grills, and trash cans. In the future, we would like to install a life jacket loaner station to enhance water safety.
The total project cost is estimated at just over $76,000. Funding for the project was received through a $15,000 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' National Handshake Program, which
encourages partnerships between the Corps and community organizations. The Friends of Burnsville Lake provided a significant contribution of $12,500 and 150 hours of volunteer
service. The remaining funds were covered by the local Corps office, utilizing a combination of labor, equipment, and money from the America the Beautiful Pass program.
This project is not only a win for recreation but also for environmental stewardship. The chosen dock system is made from durable, low-maintenance polyethylene that will not rot or splinter and is designed to prevent shoreline erosion caused by foot traffic.
The new launch will serve as a key access point for the Little Kanawha River Trail, opening new opportunities for paddlers to explore the beautiful headwaters of Burnsville Lake. The Friends of
Burnsville Lake are planning a paddle craft safety day on July 18th to kick of the new facility with a fun filled day of education and giveaways.
The Falls Mill All Access Paddle Craft Launch promises to connect more people with the natural beauty of Burnsville Lake, ensuring that a relaxing day on the water is an experience everyone can enjoy.
