Do not fall for the propaganda being spread about the latest North Carolina voting case, Kivett v. North Carolina State Board of Elections.

The headlines and social media posts circulating about this case leave out the most important fact: the voters involved are American citizens from North Carolina-connected families living abroad.

The voters at issue are American citizens born outside the United States who have never personally lived in North Carolina, but whose parent or legal guardian was last eligible to vote in North Carolina before leaving the country. They also could not have previously registered to vote in another state.

For more than a decade, North Carolina law recognized the right of these overseas American citizens to vote through their family’s North Carolina connection. This included adult children of North Carolina military families and other North Carolina families serving or working overseas.

In the related 2024 North Carolina Supreme Court election challenge, this category involved approximately 260 challenged ballots statewide, out of more than 5.5 million votes cast.

This was not widespread fraud. It was a narrow dispute over whether certain American citizens born abroad could continue voting through their North Carolina family connection, as state law had allowed them to do.

The new ruling in Kivett v. North Carolina State Board of Elections appears to block these citizens from voting through North Carolina even in federal elections, though the written order and any appeal or stay should be reviewed once publicly available.

Put plainly, this did not stop some massive scheme of illegal voting. It stripped away a voting right that North Carolina had previously recognized for a small group of American citizens, including adult children of military members and families working overseas, simply because they were born abroad while their families were serving or working outside the country.

Facts matter. Do not let misleading headlines turn American citizens and military families into political scapegoats.

We are proud to announce and endorse our full slate of candidates for Yancey County Commissioner: Landon Beaver, Amber Westall Briggs, and Carol Golightly.

Carol initially agreed to file as a placeholder candidate to make sure voters had a full choice on the ballot. Since then, she has stepped up and committed to fully running for the third commissioner seat. We are grateful for her willingness to serve, and we are excited to stand behind all three of our commissioner candidates.

Together, Landon, Amber, and Carol represent a strong team focused on transparency, responsible leadership, and a better future for Yancey County.

Town halls and local meet-and-greets are already in the works so voters can meet our commissioner candidates, along with our school board candidates Ronnie Randolph and Lavenia Burnette, as well as our other district and state candidates.

Now is the time to start making your plan to vote on Tuesday, November 3rd. Talk with your family, check in with your neighbors, and help make sure everyone you know has a plan to cast their ballot.

And go ahead and save the date for our Victory Celebration & Watch Party at the Burnsville Town Center on election night. We look forward to gathering together as a community and watching the results come in.

Forward together,

Yancey County Democratic Party
