Project Update: Standing at 18 Town Square, this historic building has been part of the Yancey County community for generations. Originally built to serve as the Citizens Bank Building, then later housing the Northwestern Bank before transitioning into public use as the Yancey County Public Library. In more recent years, it also served briefly as a technology center, continuing its long history of adapting to meet the needs of the community.

Today, Yancey County is proud to begin a new chapter for this landmark building through a full renovation of both the upper and lower floors. Thanks to grant funding, this project is focused on preserving the building’s historic character and architectural integrity while ensuring it can continue serving the community for generations to come.

The renovated lower level is expected to become the future home of Toe River Arts, creating an exciting new space for arts, culture, and community engagement right on the Town Square. Upstairs, the building will provide much-needed office space while still honoring the history and craftsmanship that make this structure such an important part of downtown Burnsville.

We are very excited about the progress of this project, and grateful for the opportunity to preserve a piece of Yancey County history while creating a space that will continue to serve our community in new ways. We can’t wait for everyone to see the finished result!
