We’re looking forward to another cozy season of reading at the library!

Please note that the library will be closed for Labor Day weekend on Saturday, September 5, and Monday, September 7. We will reopen on Tuesday, September 8, and begin our new Fall and Winter hours:

Monday–Friday: 8:30 AM–5:30 PM
Saturday: 10:00 AM–1:00 PM

We’re also excited to welcome Holly Kays, writer for Smokies Life, on Tuesday evening as she shares her experience writing nonfiction stories about our region.

Be sure to check out our September events and Bookmobile calendar—we have something for everyone this month and look forward to seeing you at the library!

🍂 Thank You, Yancey County! 🍂

Thanks to both our loyal patrons and the many new faces who visited us this summer, library attendance in August 2026 (this month) was 45% higher than August 2025 (this time last year)! Remember, the Book Cellar Used Bookstore is open anytime we are open!

We have a full week of fun activities coming up, and we'd love to see even more record-breaking attendance!

📚 Monday, August 31
• Play n' Learn – 10:00 AM (ages 0-5)
• Lego Club – 11:00 AM (ages 3+)

🍁 Tuesday, September 1
• Fall Scavenger Hunt (available throughout the day)- complete hunt and trade for a 3D printed maple leaf. (all ages)

📖 Wednesday, September 2
• Way Back Wednesday Book Club – 10:00 AM at the Senior Center (for seniors, care takers and anyone wanting to listen to a classic chapter book)
• Movement with McKenna – 4:00 PM (ages 12-18)

🐿️ Thursday, September 3
• Storytime – 11:00 AM (ages 0-6)
Theme: Squirrels

💻 Friday, September 4
• New Beginnings – 10:00 AM (new parents and tiny ones)
• Tech Time – 2:00 PM

Join us this Saturday, August 29, from 5–7 p.m. for the Closing Reception of the Herring-Kivette Gallery and Archives Retrospective Exhibit at Yancey County Public Library.

This special exhibit celebrates 70 years of Yancey County's painting tradition, featuring works created by students of Frank Stanley Herring's Burnsville Painting Classes and Everett Kivette & John Bryans' Painting in the Mountains.

Refreshments will be served, and all are welcome as we celebrate this remarkable collection and the artists who helped shape Yancey's rich artistic heritage.

Please note: the current exhibit is closing, not the gallery itself. The Herring-Kivette Gallery and Archives will remain open, and a new exhibit will debut in late fall.

It's a beautiful day to share your writing! Join us for Open Mic Night at 5:00 PM in the upstairs Meeting Room.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, if you're a caregiver or an older adult looking for community and connection, join us at the Senior Center at 10:00 AM. We'll be reading Little House on the Prairie aloud and enjoying a group discussion.

Everyone will receive a mini 3D-printed maple leaf to kick off the fall season! We'll also have simple, free art kits that you can take home and enjoy together.

We are ready to serve the community! Step aboard, check it out and end with a sweet treat from Kona. Here until 1 pm!
