🚲 Helmet Safety Matters! 🚲

As the weather warms up and more people head outside to ride bikes, skateboards, scooters, and other wheeled activities, don’t forget your most important piece of safety equipment β€” your helmet!

A properly fitted helmet can significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries in a crash or fall.

βœ… Always wear a helmet, no matter how short the ride.
βœ… Make sure it sits level on your head and fits snugly.
βœ… Buckle the chin strap securely every time.
βœ… Replace helmets that have been involved in a crash or show signs of damage.
βœ… Set a good example for children by wearing your own helmet.

Whether you’re riding through the neighborhood, on local trails, or to a friend’s house, taking a few seconds to put on a helmet can make all the difference.

Stay safe and enjoy the ride! πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ”₯ Burning Questions πŸ”₯
Why should you sleep with your bedroom door closed?

Closing your bedroom door at night can make a big difference in a fire.

In the event of a house fire, a closed door can help:
πŸšͺ Slow the spread of flames
πŸšͺ Reduce the amount of toxic smoke entering the room
πŸšͺ Lower temperatures inside the room
πŸšͺ Provide valuable extra time for occupants to escape or be rescued

Studies have shown that a room with a closed door can remain significantly cooler and safer than a room with an open door during a fire.

While working smoke alarms are your first line of defense, sleeping with your bedroom door closed adds another layer of protection for you and your family.

A simple habit before bed could save your life.

πŸš’ As we close out our Meet the Officers series, we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible leadership, dedication, and hard work of the officers of the Burnt Hills Fire Department.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve had the opportunity to highlight the people behind the titles β€” sharing their stories, experiences, and passion for serving the community. But beyond what’s been featured in these posts are the countless hours our officers put in behind the scenes every single day.

From trainings, meetings, and mentoring members, to maintaining readiness, coordinating emergencies, and ensuring the department operates smoothly, their commitment goes far beyond responding to calls. Being an officer requires sacrifice, leadership, and a dedication to both the department and the community they proudly serve.

To all of our officers β€” thank you for the time, effort, and heart you put into BHFD. Your leadership and service do not go unnoticed, and our department and community are stronger because of you. ❀️

And while this series may be coming to an end, there are still exciting things ahead! πŸ‘€ Be on the lookout next week as we launch a brand new series highlighting more of what makes the Burnt Hills Fire Department so special. πŸš’

πŸ•οΈπŸ”₯ Camping & Campfire Safety πŸ”₯πŸ•οΈ

As camping season gets underway, the Burnt Hills Fire Department would like to remind everyone to stay safe while enjoying the outdoors!

πŸ”₯ Campfire Safety Tips:
β€’ Only use designated fire pits or rings
β€’ Keep fires at least 15 feet away from tents, trees, brush, and anything flammable
β€’ Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start a fire
β€’ Keep a bucket of water, dirt, or a shovel nearby at all times
β€’ Never leave a campfire unattended β€” even for a few minutes
β€’ Before leaving or going to bed, fully extinguish the fire with water and stir the ashes until cool to the touch

πŸ•οΈ Camping Safety Reminders:
β€’ Check local burn bans and campground rules before having a fire
β€’ Keep matches and lighters away from children
β€’ Use flashlights instead of candles inside tents
β€’ Make sure grills and cooking equipment are on stable surfaces away from tents and dry grass
β€’ Be aware of weather conditions, especially wind, which can quickly spread fire

A safe campfire creates great memories β€” an unsafe one can quickly become an emergency. Stay alert, stay prepared, and enjoy the outdoors safely!

πŸ”₯ Burning Questions πŸ”₯
❓ What happens after the fire department leaves a scene?

Many people see the fire trucks leave β€” but the work doesn’t stop there. πŸš’

Once crews return to the station, there’s still a lot that happens to make sure we’re ready for the next emergency:

β›½ Trucks are checked and fueled up if needed
🧼 Apparatus, hoses, tools, and equipment are cleaned and washed
πŸ› οΈ All equipment is inspected and returned to operational condition
πŸ“ Members who responded sign the LOSAP sheet to receive credit for their service and response
πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’ Chief officers ensure everything is accounted for and the station is back in service before members are cleared to leave

Whether it’s a fire alarm, motor vehicle accident, or structure fire, firefighters work hard behind the scenes to make sure the department is always ready for the next call.
