Smoke alarm (and carbon monoxide detector) batteries should be changed twice a year. A great way to remember this is to change your batteries when you change your clocks. We encourage you to take some time, you do have an extra hour Sunday, to change your batteries.

Be sure to check the dates on your alarms too. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years and carbon monoxide detectors every 7 years.

We have recently fielded several questions as to why our burning ordinance does not allow residents to burn leaves. The reason is because the DEQ prohibits it in a municipality of our size. Below is an excerpt from Act 451 of 1994.

NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT (EXCERPT)
Act 451 of 1994

324.11522 Open burning of grass clippings or leaves; open burning of household waste; materials; violation; extension of prohibition to materials not listed in subsection (3); open burning of wooden fruit or vegetable storage bins constructed from untreated lumber; requirements; effect of local ordinance; burning of United States flag.
Sec. 11522.

(1) The open burning of grass clippings or leaves is prohibited in any municipality having a population of 7,500 or more, unless specifically authorized by local ordinance, which ordinance shall be reported to the department of natural resources within 30 days of enactment.
(2) Subsection (1) does not permit a county or municipality to authorize open burning of grass clippings or leaves by an ordinance that would otherwise be prohibited under part 55 or rules promulgated under that part.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to two area fire departments who are mourning the loss of personnel. Retired Chief James Bronson of the Clio Area Fire Department and Retired Sgt. Craig Ratliff of the Flint Township Fire Department have both passed away. Chief Bronson served for 42 years with 20 of them as Chief and Sgt. Ratliff served for 32 years. They will be missed by their departments and the families within them. Rest In Peace gentlemen.

FDNY firefighter Tim Duffy was off work the day of September 11, 2001, but when he realized what was going on, he donned his firefighter gear and rode his 2000 Super Glide Sport into lower Manhattan to help out. He made it to the base of the south tower of the World Trade Center as it began to collapse and the force of the building crashing down buried him in debris.

He freed himself, only thinking of others who'd also been victims of the terrorist attack. That day he helped save people who'd been seriously injured, commandeering a truck and driving back and forth to Ground Zero to assist wherever he could. Duffy retired due to health problems from breathing in the toxic dust, and now helps first responders and veterans with PTSD through the organization he founded, 1 Soldier 1 Dog 1 Team.

On this night 19 years ago 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning. 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift of saving lives. None of them saw past 10:00am Sept 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same. Tonight as you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted.

One of our firefighters (GBCFD) was on his way to Cleveland and stopped in a small town. He struck up a conversation with a guy and he took our firefighter to see something he was passionate about. When I was looking through his photos, this one stuck out to me.....proof that Ken Gould has been on since the horse drawn carriages Photo credit to Jeremy Jones
