As many prepare to attend the annual Sand Drags event at the Canadian River this weekend, please understand that wildfire conditions remain extreme and rapidly changing.
The Lavender Fire is still active and only partially contained, burning near the Canadian River area. Red Flag warnings, high winds, and dry fuels create a dangerous environment. A burn ban remains in effect — no fires of any kind are permitted.
Since the fires began on 02/17, PCLEA members as well as fire personnel and other first responders across Potter County have been working extended hours in challenging conditions to protect lives and property. Emergency resources remain heavily committed, and fire personnel will likely not be staged at the river this weekend. Response times may be delayed.
If you choose to attend:
- Be smart and avoid unnecessary risks
- Follow all burn ban restrictions
- Yield to emergency vehicles on Highways 87 and 287
- Understand that immediate assistance may not be available
Please do not tax already strained emergency services. Responsible decisions this weekend help protect our community and the first responders who have been working non-stop since this began.
As always, we want to thank our members and all the first responders working tirelessly to protect the citizens of Potter County and hope for a safe and calm weekend.
