Dade Battlefield Society Experience history firsthand. Contribute to preserving the natural beauty of Florida. Making History Come Alive!

Create meaningful experiences for others while deepening your own cultural understanding. Dade Battlefield Historic State Park, acquired by the State of Florida in 1921, is the second oldest site in the state whose protection and preservation is designated as being in the best interests of its citizens. Although for two generations its main use was as a recreational spot for nearby residents, its

main focus was never lost: a memorial for the brave men, both soldiers and Native Americans, whose 1835 battle marked the beginning of the Second Seminole War, the longest conflict in the first 195 years of American history. In the mid-1950’s the State moved to more formally embrace the 80-acre property into its official park system, making improvements and other steps to bring the actual battlefield’s appearance back to what it was when Major Francis L. Dade’s command had been defeated by a greatly superior Seminole force. By 1987, the Dade Battlefield Society, formed with support from both the local community and others interested in preserving our natural and cultural heritage, became the park’s Citizen Support Organization. Our Society is concerned with increasing public awareness of Dade Battlefield and its significance through living history events, nature programs, social functions, educational and recreational activities, festivals, and our highly authentic annual reenactment of Dade’s Battle that is held each January. We are a diverse group of like-minded volunteers who proudly operate the Dade Battlefield Society exclusively for charitable purposes.

Board Members of Dade Battlefield Society were honored to accept a proclamation from the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners recognizing May as National Historic Preservation Month. An additional proclamation was also presented to Scenic Sumter Heritage Byway.

Preserving and sharing the history of Dade's Battle and Florida’s past would not be possible without the continued support of our community, volunteers, DBS members, park staff and local leaders. We are grateful for the county’s recognition of the importance of protecting historic places and ensuring their stories continue to be told for future generations.

Thank you to the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners for supporting historic preservation and the mission of Dade Battlefield Society.

After many years of dedicated service, we are both proud and a little bittersweet to announce the retirement of volunteer Karen Cloud from Dade Battlefield Historic State Park.

Karen has been an integral part of the park’s story, leaving a lasting impact on our community and visitors alike. She played a leading role in the Dade Youth Program, inspiring and educating countless young people, and was the driving force behind our beloved annual Halloween event—bringing creativity, fun, and a true sense of community spirit year after year.

Her passion, leadership, and commitment have helped shape the park into what it is today. Karen’s legacy will continue to be felt in the programs she built and the memories she helped create.

Please join us in thanking Karen for her years of volunteer service and wishing her all the best in this next chapter of her life. Congratulations on your well-earned retirement, Karen!

🍄 Fungi Friday Spotlight: Earth Star! ⭐
This week for Fungi Friday, we’re featuring the fascinating Earth Star mushroom! Named for its star-like shape, this unusual fungus begins as a round ball before its outer layer splits open into pointed rays, revealing a spore sac in the center.

Some Earth Stars can even respond to moisture—opening wider in damp conditions and closing up when dry. Nature has its own little wonders!

These woodland fungi play an important role in breaking down organic matter and returning nutrients to the soil.

Keep your eyes on the forest floor during your next visit—you never know what amazing fungi you might discover! And remember, never eat wild mushrooms, as many can be poisonous and difficult to identify.

Have you ever spotted an Earth Star in the wild? Share with us in the comments! 🍄✨

🐝 What's Buzzing at Dade Battlefield?🌳

Visitors may notice a cluster of honey bees gathered on a tree in the park. These bees appear to have swarmed from somewhere else claiming this tree cavity as their new home.

Honey bees are important pollinators, helping support the plants and wildflowers we enjoy at Dade Battlefield Historic State Park. We’re glad to share our park with these hardworking little visitors!

If you spot the bees during your visit, please admire them from a respectful distance and do not disturb them.

Have you seen our buzzing guests at the park? Share your photos in the comments! 🍯🐝

🍄 Fungi Friday at Dade Battlefield Historic State Park 🍄

This week we’re featuring the Genus Lentinus—a group of wood-loving mushrooms commonly known as “sawgills.” If you look closely at the underside, you’ll notice their gills have a jagged, saw-like edge, which is how they got their name!
Lentinus species are typically found growing on fallen logs and decaying wood throughout Florida, especially after periods of rain. They play an important role in the ecosystem by breaking down tough plant material like lignin, helping return nutrients back into the soil.

Some species, like Lentinus crinitus, are easy to spot with their textured, sometimes hairy caps and sturdy stems—but identification can be tricky, as many mushrooms look similar.

⚠️ Important Reminder: Never eat wild mushrooms. Many species can be poisonous or even deadly, and proper identification requires expert knowledge. Please enjoy fungi with your eyes and camera only! 📸

Have you seen a sawgill mushroom out on the trails? Let us know in the comments!
