Did you know that as of March 2, 2026 there are 1,648,319 active license to carry permits in Pennsylvania?

•A License to carry fi****ms is issued to carry a firearm concealed on one’s person or in a vehicle within this Commonwealth.

•To apply for a license to carry fi****ms, you must apply at the sheriffs office in the county in which you reside. If you live in a city of the first class (Philadelphia). Then you would apply through the Philadelphia Police Department.

•The sheriffs office has 45 days to process the application for a license to carry and determine eligibility. This process includes a criminal background check through the Pennsylvania instant check system. (PICS)

•A license to carry fi****ms is valid for a five year timeframe unless revoked sooner. If your license has been revoked for any reason, you will be notified by the Sheriff’s Office via US mail.

•Some offices also have an online application (Permitum) where you can apply from the comfort of your home.

•A license to carry is not a license to purchase. Individuals must complete a background check when buying a firearm from a licensed dealer.

• For information concerning those states with reciprocity agreements with Pennsylvania, please visit the Attorney General’s website.
