Members of the Butler Shade Tree Commission and Butler AM Rotary collaborated Saturday, Oct. 7, to beautify the first impression many motorists have of Butler.

The commission took over the maintenance of the patch of ground beside the northbound lane on Route 8 at the intersection at Pittsburgh Street, just across from the end of the Gen. Richard Butler Bridge.

The space boasts a large sign that reads “Welcome to Butler” and includes artwork by renowned Butler artist Tom Panei.

In an ongoing effort to create a cultural district in downtown Butler, a 2,000-pound galloping metal horse and cowboy rider created by local artist Bill Secunda will greet northbound motorists about to cross the Gen. Richard Butler Bridge going into the city. Thank you to Bill for use of this beautiful sculpture and to our shade tree for all they do to beautify our wonderful community. Four trees that bloom pink in the spring will be planted behind the horse in the coming days to accentuate the statue.
