From the Muscatatuck Archives: on May 22, 2009, Pvt. Michael Meadows of Daleville, Ind., became the first soldier to come to the new Army National Guard’s Patriot Academy. The Academy, housed at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, was a three-year pilot program which saw its first class take place on August 26, 2009, under Commandant COL. Perry Sarver and last class graduate on January 12, 2013, under future Jennings County Sherrif, Commandant Lt. Col. Kenny Freeman.

During that time, 505 soldiers from all parts of the United States came to Muscatatuck and, by attending the Patriot Academy, graduated with an Indiana High School Diploma, several hours of college courses, and required community service under their belt.

You can see artifacts from the Patriot Academy at the Muscatatuck Museum during this year's Open House on Saturday, September 13th as we celebrate 20 Years of Strength. The public Open House begins at 10 a.m. and the 5K Run/Walk/Ruck begins at 8 a.m. Reserve your place for the 5K at the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/muscatatuck-training-center-open-house-5k-runwalkruck-tickets-1389494739169?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl

From the Muscatatuck Archives: On April 9, 2009, a decommissioned Bell UH-1 Vietnam-era Huey helicopter was airlifted by an Indiana National Guard Sikorsky UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter and dropped from more than 200 feet in order to create a realistic downed aviator recovery training site.

Before the drop, the Huey helicopter measured approximately 41 feet long. After the helicopter hit the ground nose first, it measured 12 feet long.

The downed aviator recovery site has been used for its original purpose as well as a ground marker for land navigation, a rally point, and a marker during air training.

Today, we look back at the first Muscatatuck Urban Training Center Commander, Lt. Col. Ken McCallister. McCallister was given the unenviable task of turning a former state mental facility into a world-class training center.

The original MUTC sign stood for years until a replacement was required due to wear and tear.

McCallister had the help of a small team of dedicated professionals, as you will see from the staff photo.

Celebrate with us on Saturday, September 13th, as we look back on 20 Years of Strength at Muscatatuck Training Center! The celebration starts at 10 a.m. and the annual 5K Run/Walk/Ruck kicks off at 8 a.m. You can sign up for the free 5K here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/muscatatuck-training-center-open-house-5k-runwalkruck-tickets-1389494739169?aff=oddtdtcreator

By the Spring of 2007, the Indiana National Guard had been in control of Muscatatuck Urban Training Center for two years but the question was always "Where is the money going to come from?"

On April 17, 2007, a press conference was held at the Statehouse in order to update the citizens of Indiana. Led by then-Governor Mitch Daniels, a lineup of government and military professionals, including then-Indiana National Guard Adjutant General Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger answered questions the public had.

The Indianapolis Star article from April 18, 2007, is included here, as well.

We're looking back on 20 years of Muscatatuck history! Today's post is about the first of many years of Firefighter training at MUTC.

On October 2, 2007, members of the 38th Combat Aviation Brigade briefed local and Muscatatuck Firefighters on emergency procedures for the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter at the North Vernon, Indiana, Municipal Airport.

When Muscatatuck was turned over to the Indiana National Guard in 2005, a skeleton crew was brought in to begin the job of figuring out exactly what to do with the buildings and equipment that came with the property. They knew that the end goal was to create a world-class training facility, but there was a LOT of work to do first.

On July 1, 2005, a few of these early MUTC pioneers took a photo at the Brush Creek Reservoir. they were from Left to Right:
Sgt. 1st Class Bob Hempstead, 1st Lt. Nicholas Roukas, Sgt. 1st Class Bret Arthur, (Center) Maj. Todd Harless, Master Sgt. John Beasley, Cpt. Bart Turner, and Master Sgt. Dave Jenkins.
