๐ฅPrescribed Fire Operations๐ฅ
Week of April 6, 2026
Fire officials on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest may implement prescribed burning operations this week, as weather and fuels conditions allow. Fire officials will closely monitor weather conditions prior to ignitions.
POTENTIAL project areas include the following:
MADISON RANGER DISTRICT:
๐ Greenhorns Project - The targeted units (Powder Gulch and Ice Cree areas) are located on the west face of the Greenhorn Mountain range, 12 miles south-southwest of Virginia City, 15 miles southeast of Alder, and 21 miles southwest of Ennis. Though no significant smoke impacts are anticipated, smoke may be visible from the surrounding communities of Virginia City, Alder, Sheridan, and Ennis.
๐ Bear Creek Admin Site - Located 7 miles southeast of Cameron and adjacent to Bear Creek Campground, fire crews will burn approximately 10 acres of woody debris in the administrative pasture. Smoke may be visible from Cameron and US Highway 287 for short durations. Those utilizing Bear Creek Campground and Trailhead should be aware of the operations.
BLM and DILLON/WISDOM RANGER DISTRICTS:
๐ Joint East Pioneers Project- The Bureau of Land Management-administered burn is located near Melrose, along the east face of the Pioneer Mountains. In coordination with our partners at the Western Montana District of the BLM, Forest Service firefighters will continue operations from last weekend and maintain a presence in the units throughout the week to mop-up hotspots and secure previous operations. Smoke may be visible from the communities of Melrose and Glen and from the Interstate 15 corridor that parallels the project area.
BUTTE RANGER DISTRICT:
๐ Red Rocks Project - The targeted units are located 17 miles north of Butte, 8 miles west of Basin, and 4 miles west and north of the Bernice exit off Interstate 15 in Jefferson County. Fire crews, in partnership with Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, may burn up to 150-200 acres throughout the week. Smoke may be visible in the Interstate 15 corridor between Bernice and Basin and in the Red Rock Creek drainage.
๐ Fleecer Project - The targeted units are located 3 miles west of the Feeley exit off Interstate 15. Fire crews, in partnership with Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, may burn up to 230 acres throughout the week and weekend. Smoke may be visible in the Interstate 15 corridor near Feeley.
PINTLER RANGER DISTRICT:
๐ EDLV Project - Located 12 miles southeast of Deer Lodge and a half mile east of the Orofino Campground, fire crews may burn up to 105 acres this week. Minimal impacts are expected; however, smoke may be visible from Opportunity and Deer Lodge and from Interstate 90 for short durations.
DILLON RANGER DISTRICT:
๐ French Creek Project - Targeted units are located 4 miles northwest of Argenta and 15 miles northwest of Dillon. Fire crews may burn up to 250 acres over several days. Minimal impacts are expected, but smoke may be visible from Argenta and Dillon and along Highway 278 and Interstate 15.
