On July 28, 1973, the Medical Arts Building, originally known as the Owsley Block, caught fire and burned. Built 1888-1891 by William Owsley and located on the corner of Park and Main streets, it housed many businesses throughout the years. Today we feature a before, during, and after the fire photo series. Do you remember when this magnificent building burned?

40 years ago today, Montana Resources started mining the East Continental Pit! To learn more about this day in history and the events leading up to it, listen to the episode titled "Deal of the Century" which was part of the Verdigris Project, a radio series that recorded oral histories and told the stories of working people in Butte.

After Atlantic Richfield bought the remaining pieces of the Anaconda Company empire in Montana in 1977, they only lasted about 5 years before they closed all mining and smelting in Montana permanently. It was a bad time for the people of Butte and thousands of men were out of work.

When walking up to the Montana Folk Festival, be sure to stop outside the Archives to learn about fun and pivotal events in Butte's history on our brand-new yard signs, which we were able to purchase with funding from Montana 250!

100 years ago today, tightrope artist O.K. Stuart thrilled crowds as he walked the tightrope over Park Street. His breathtaking feat was part of a five-day celebration commemorating the 150th anniversary of the United States. The festivities featured an aerial circus, baseball games, speeches, parades, and a spectacular fireworks display, bringing the community together to celebrate the nation's sesquicentennial in grand fashion.
