The Ocean Report for the beaches of Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Villages for Friday, May 29th. Current as of 0340 hrs.

Welcome to Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day! Honest....it's a day observed simply by placing a pillow on top of your refrigerator. This holiday goes back over 100-years....before the refrigerator was invented. It started when folks had larders, a large cabinet for storing food. Folks would use big blocks of ice to keep the larder cool and then would place a piece of cloth on top for good luck. Eventually this became putting a pillow on their refrigerator for luck. You can't make this stuff up. Try it and see if your luck changes. 😏

If you or someone else needs assistance, please dial 911 and KNOW YOUR APPROXIMATE LOCATION on the beach or sound side areas.

Digging in the sand is more dangerous than it seems. Every year, people suffocate in collapsed holes and tunnels on beaches.

🚫 Never dig a hole deeper than it is wide. Keep them no deeper than knee-height.
🌊 Remember to fill in any holes before leaving the beach to ensure everyone's safety.
πŸ•³οΈ Large sand holes hinder emergency rescues by lifeguards.
🐒 During sea turtle nesting season (May-September), these holes are deadly obstacles for nesting turtles and hatchlings.

Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves.

Certain tide conditions can increase rip currents to dangerous speeds. People get in trouble when they are moved so far offshore that they are unable to get back to the shore because of fear, panic, exhaustion or inefficient swimming skills.

Lifeguards are trained to identify these hazards. Always swim at a lifeguarded beach and ask a lifeguard about the conditions before entering the water.
