Buxton Fire-Rescue is keeping the family, friends, and fellow firefighters in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that the West Bath Fire Department announces the loss of a longtime member and officer. For decades, Mike Drake served as a member, holding many ranks throughout his time here. He was best known for his passion for training firefighters, not only training members of the West Bath Fire Department but also members of countless area departments and nationally at FDIC. He will forever be missed, leaving a hole that will never be filled, but his legacy of service to the Town of West Bath and surrounding communities will never be forgotten.

In his honor, we have lowered our flags to half‑staff and lit our department green to honor the life and service of Maine Game Warden Joshua Tibbetts, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash Tuesday morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife and the Maine Warden Service as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.

We’ve had a report of a black bear passing through parts of Buxton. This isn’t unusual in our area, and black bears typically keep to themselves and move along when they don’t find food.
Just a few simple reminders to help keep everyone — people, pets, and wildlife — safe:

- Please secure trash, bird feeders, and any pet food outside
- Clean and store grills when not in use
- Never approach or feed a bear
- Keep pets close or supervised, especially early in the morning or evening
-If you do see a bear, stay calm, give it plenty of space, and slowly move away

There’s no cause for concern at this time. Most bears want nothing to do with people and will move on if the area doesn’t offer easy food.
If you notice a bear hanging around neighborhoods, acting unusually, or appearing injured, please reach out the Maine Game Wardens.

You’ll see Buxton Fire crews out around town over the next few weeks testing our dry hydrants. Because Buxton does not have pressurized municipal hydrants, we rely on dry hydrants to supply water during a fire. These systems are essential for rural fire protection, and regular testing ensures they’re ready when needed.

A dry hydrant is a non‑pressurized pipe installed at a pond or water source. It allows firefighters to quickly draft water using our engines or tankers. Instead of opening a hydrant and having water flow out under pressure, we pull water from the source using suction

Wildfire season is here in Maine, and several fires have already been reported across the state. Conditions are dry in many areas, and it doesn’t take much for a small spark to turn into something dangerous.
If you plan on doing any outdoor burning, you MUST obtain a burn permit and follow all safety guidelines.
Burn Permit can be obtained by following this link https://apps1.web.maine.gov/burnpermit/public/index.html

The front bumper turret on Engine 422 proved to be a highly effective tool during this incident, allowing crews to quickly apply a large volume of water from an exterior position. This rapid initial knockdown significantly reduced fire intensity in the basement, improving conditions for firefighters and helping to limit fire extension to the upper levels of the home. Great job to the responding crews!
