It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of the Searsmont Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Woodbury, who succumbed to injuries sustained in the recent incident at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont.
We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, loved ones, and the members of the Searsmont Fire Department during this profoundly difficult time. His dedication, service, and commitment to his community will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.

Last week, members of Buxton Fire-Rescue, along with mutual aid departments from Gorham and Hollis, conducted a training exercise focused on managing a propane emergency scenario. The situation required a sustained fire flow of approximately 500 gallons per minute (GPM) to control the incident. Through coordinated operations and water supply management, crews successfully achieved and maintained a flow of 700 GPM, exceeding the required demand. This training highlighted the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation, water supply planning, and operational readiness for high-demand incidents.

Residents can expect increased emergency vehicle traffic in the area during the training. Please use caution, reduce your speed, and be prepared for possible minor delays.

Buxton Fire-Rescue is keeping the family, friends, and fellow firefighters in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that the West Bath Fire Department announces the loss of a longtime member and officer. For decades, Mike Drake served as a member, holding many ranks throughout his time here. He was best known for his passion for training firefighters, not only training members of the West Bath Fire Department but also members of countless area departments and nationally at FDIC. He will forever be missed, leaving a hole that will never be filled, but his legacy of service to the Town of West Bath and surrounding communities will never be forgotten.

We’ve had a report of a black bear passing through parts of Buxton. This isn’t unusual in our area, and black bears typically keep to themselves and move along when they don’t find food.
Just a few simple reminders to help keep everyone — people, pets, and wildlife — safe:

- Please secure trash, bird feeders, and any pet food outside
- Clean and store grills when not in use
- Never approach or feed a bear
- Keep pets close or supervised, especially early in the morning or evening
-If you do see a bear, stay calm, give it plenty of space, and slowly move away

There’s no cause for concern at this time. Most bears want nothing to do with people and will move on if the area doesn’t offer easy food.
If you notice a bear hanging around neighborhoods, acting unusually, or appearing injured, please reach out the Maine Game Wardens.
