The MMA AUP Unit hosted LCDR Collin Tuttle, USCG as a guest speaker to discuss his experiences with breaking on the Great Lakes. LCDR Tuttle has experience on the CGC Mackinaw and the CGC Katmai Bay. He provided interesting insights into the ice breaking missions and fielded a multitude of questions during his presentation. LCDR Turtle is currently assigned to the USCG Academy.

Congratulations to our Unit Operations Officer, 1/C Stead!

1/C Addison Stead (middle) was sworn in at Recruiting Office - Providence for the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) program. Under this program, CDT Stead will go to basic training at TRACEN Cape May, NJ in June following graduation and then he will go to Boatswain Mate A-School in September. He is also submitting his package for a commission in the Coast Guard.

Congratulations to 2/C Mitch Campbell for obtaining a Marine Safety Training Specialist certificate. He received this award a few nights ago at his Flotilla meeting with Flotilla 7-2 for gaining two qualifications during his internship this past summer – Marine Safety Administration Specialist and Marine Prevention Outreach Specialist!

On December 17th, 2022, 4 of our members participated in National Wreaths Across America Day. 1\C Smith, 1/C Horgan, 2/C Bohnet, and 4/C Whalen took a break from studying for finals to join other local Auxiliarists in at the Massachusetts National Cemetery.

Wreaths Across America is a national wreath laying ceremony for veterans across the country. Our Auxiliarists and Active Duty members had the opportunity to pay their respects to those who have served our country during this holiday season.

On Friday, 18 NOV Tegan Murray, MMA AUP Unit Leader, Class of ‘22 and Cameron Craveiro, MMA AUP Deputy Unit Leader, Class of ‘22 were commissioned into the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps and U.S. Coast Guard, respectively. The NOAA Basic Officer Training Class (BOTC) 140 consisted of 12 officer candidates and the USCG Officer Candidate School (OCS) 1-23 consisted of 86 officer candidates. Both training programs are conducted at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

ENS Murray is assigned to the NOAA Ship Oscar Elton Sette, Honolulu, Hawaii. The 224-foot ship supports research surveys for fisheries, physical and chemical oceanography, marine mammals, sea turtles, marine debris, and coral reefs throughout the central and western Pacific.

ENS Craveiro is assigned to the USCG Cutter Spar, Duluth, Minnesota. The Spar is a Juniper-Class, 225-foot multi mission buoy tender who’s primary mission is aids to navigation, ice breaking, law enforcement and search & rescue. In addition, the SPAR supports marine environmental protection and port security missions on Lake Superior and upper Lake Michigan.

Attending the graduation were Auxiliarists Lisa Goodwin, Branch Chief, AUP Academic Affairs and Russ Gasdia, Branch Chief, AUP Development. Ms Goodwin and Mr Gasdia support the MMA AUP unit as Auxiliary Unit Liaisons. Professor Samantha Coonan, Emergency Management Department, and a USCG Academy graduate, was also in attendance. Professor Coonan serves at the Faculty Advisior for the MMA AUP unit.

2/C Jacob Bolles was awarded a certificate for his RBS Program Visitor Qualification and 3/C James Cirillo was awarded a certificate for gaining BQ status!

Each Cadet works towards getting a variety of qualifications and certifications during their time in the AUP. Visit the National AUP website for more information about the program and the different qualifications that are available to you.

Cadets from the MMA AUP unit were welcomed back to tour units based at Sector Southeastern New England in Woods Hole, MA. This included the USCGC Hammerhead, STA Woods Hole’s 45 RBM and 29 RBS, the Sector Command Center where all SAR cases are managed and the Woods Hole Aids to Navigation Team. They were educated on the missions of each of the units, the assets and areas of responsibility. They also shared lunch with personnel from STA Woods Hole.
