All of the participants throughly enjoyed learning to create their own masterpieces at "Sketch Me If You Can" with Anthony Moore today at the Ruth B. French Library!! Anthony did an amazing job of demonstrating and explaining different techniques to help them improve their artistic abilities!!! September's Plant of the Month: Sunflower ๐ŸŒป

Description: Sunflower is part of the daisy family. They are native to North & Central America. Bloom time: Summer until Frost. They are annuals except the Maximillan Sunflowers which are perennials. They come in a variety of colors ranging from white, yellow, yellow/orange, bronze and burgundy. Many grow one foot to six feet tall.

Purpose:
Sunflowers are great for pollinators and attract butterflies and bees.
Sunflowers are raised to harvest the seeds and oil.

Growing Conditions:
Sunflowers can be planted in Full Sun/well drainage soil by planting seeds or seedlings. It will take 8-10 days for germination and a total of 60 days prior to bloom time. It is recommended to do successor planting to be able to enjoy these cheerful flowers for several months.

Common Diseases/Pests:
Common pests are Aphids and Lygus bugs. Sunflowers release allelopathic chemicals and they grow and shouldnโ€™t be planted near beans or potatoes.
