Cordell Hull Birthplace State Historic Park

Cordell Hull Birthplace State Historic Park The park is the birthplace of the longest-serving Secretary of State under President Roosevelt.

This historic park is notable for its opportunities to learn about the Nobel Prize winner, Cordell Hull. A library that has his complete book collection, a cave to explore, and a lookout spot, are all some of the attractions at this park. More information on this park and many more can be found at the TN State Parks website.

This month鈥檚 Go Green With Us themes are bats and water quality, two of our favorite things here at Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park.

Both water quality and bats are an integral part of what makes Bunkum Cave so special and are important parts of its delicate ecosystem. Bunkum Cave is home to species such as the Tennessee cave salamander, which spends its life in the larval stage and relies on clean, healthy water to survive. Tricolored bats skim low over water to catch insects and depend on clean streams, such as Cove Creek, which runs through Bunkum Cave.

Join us for one of our bat or water quality themed programs this month and learn more about the connections between clean water and Bunkum Cave. Programs and registration can be found here: https://tnstateparks.com/parks/cordell-hull-birthplace

While we practice these themes year-round, we鈥檙e excited to invite our visitors to get involved through a hands-on volunteer day to support biodiversity! Learn to identify and remove invasive species to support conservation efforts of our Tennessee native species.

This event is also a great opportunity for students to earn Tennessee Promise volunteer hours.

Join Seasonal Interpretive Ranger Kandace for cave exploration designed for kids (and parents) at Bunkum Cave! We will do a cave scavenger hunt and identify an array of cave features and any troglofauna we may encounter.

This program is designed for kids ages 6 and up who are interested in exploring the interior features of Bunkum Cave. The trail to the cave has gradual inclines and declines, stairs, large boulders, or rocks. This program is $5 per person.

We will meet at the Bunkum Cave Trail Head at 9 AM and make our way down the trail to the entrance of Bunkum Cave. The hike to the cave and back to the parking lot is about 1.4 miles roundtrip plus the trip into the cave.

There is no repelling, ascending, or crawling for this caving program. We will explore the standing portion of the cave and will not go back into the crawling portion of the cave.

Things to consider to make the most of this experience:

路 The interior of the cave stays at 55 degrees Fahrenheit, please bring warmer clothes if needed.

路 Bring plenty of water and snacks if needed (what you pack in please pack out).

路 The shoes you wear to the cave will get wet, consider bringing a change of shoes/socks.

路 If you want to bring your own flashlight you are welcome to do so!

路 There are no restrooms, so be sure to try and take care of that before we head off.

To make the most of this experience, we recommend dressing comfortably for outdoor activities, wearing sturdy walking shoes, and bringing water.

In the event of inclement weather this program will be cancelled.
