Bunkum Cave is open to the public with a permit from May 1st, 2026 to August 31st, 2026.

Here are a few things you can do to protect our natural resource and its inhabitants:
• Get a required free permit here: https://stateoftennessee.formstack.com/forms/caving_bunkum_cave

• Decontaminate your clothes and gear before and after! Diseases such as White-nose Syndrome can be transferred to other areas on your shoes and gear. This can cause an already declining bat population to suffer even greater.https://rebuild.tnstateparks.com/assets/pdf/additional-content/Clean_Caving_Guidelines.pdf

• Watch where you are walking! Cave Salamanders love to hide on rocks and Tennessee Cave Salamanders and Crawfish live in the puddles within the cave. When walking into the cave do your best to stay out of the pools of water.

• Talk in a low whisper. Residents of the cave are used to a very quiet space.

• Don’t blind the wildlife or others! When observing in the cave try to avoid directly shining the light into the eyes of wildlife, they are used to a very dark space.

• Don’t touch or pick up the wildlife. Avoid disturbing cave organisms or their environment.

• Pack out everything you pack in.

• Stay on established trials. Try not to disturb the cave formations and surfaces.
