Is it a Wood Duck or a Mallard Duck? 🤔

Mallards can be seen year-round at Bethany Reservoir and are common all throughout California. The male Mallard has that iridescent green head to attract females. While not as flashy, the females sport mottled brown plumage.

The Wood Duck also has a green head, but the coloration is unique. With a shorter neck and beak, these ducks stand out! That slicked back feathered crest on top of its head gives the male wood duck a rockabilly vibe. Migration season is the only time of year you might spot a wood duck at Bethany Reservoir!

Happy Fall from Bethany Reservoir!

The air is getting crisper, the nights are getting longer, and the pumpkin spice is spicing!

The end of September is also the beginning of bird migration season! Bethany Reservoir is a stopover spot along the Pacific Flyway for birds heading south for the winter. Visit Bethany Reservoir in the early morning, or early evening for bird watching.

A HUGE thank you to everyone that joined us at Bethany Reservoir this past Tuesday morning for our first ever Toddler Tuesday! The weather was beautiful with sunny skies and no wind. Such a blast and so much joy.

We never said our puns are smart, but you can be! Water smart that is. Life jackets provide buoyancy and prevent drowning.

Don't own a life jacket? We've got you covered! While at Bethany Reservoir, borrow a loaner life jacket down by the boat launch. Be warned though, if you don't put it back you may be responsible for more bad puns.

How to check the fit of your life jacket:

-Adjusting the Straps: Ensure a snug fit without restricting movement.
-Check Buoyancy: The jacket should keep your chin above water.
-Test Mobility: Move your arms and torso to ensure comfort and range of motion when in the water.

Raccoons! Not just one raccoon, but a whole family of raccoons. 🦝

Raccoons get a bad reputation, but they're amazing animals! These omnivorous critters are known as trash pandas, but trash is the result of people not nature. They use their sense of touch and smell to forage for food. If it feels like food and smells like food, they'll eat it. We can help raccoons have a healthier lifestyle by remembering to throw away our trash in sealed trash cans.

Seeing a group of raccoons in these trail cam videos leads us to believe this is an adult female with her young.

Adult males are solitary, foraging alone and looking for females during mating season. Adult females will form societal groups with aunts, sisters, mothers, nieces, etc. staying together as a family unit.
