Erin Mikkalson and Leah Quam at Byron’s new barber shop – The Combover - keep customers looking good. 🪮

Erin Mikkalson hit the ground running when she opened her mobile barber shop in 2021, during the last months of the COVID pandemic. She had been a barber for more than 20 years having previously worked in Kasson and Rochester. She decided to go out on her own and so she had purchased a converted ice shack which she towed to her two locations: Plaza 57 in Kasson and Fleet Farm in Rochester.

Business picked up and she soon hired her best friend, Leah Quam to help in the two-chair shop.

But the constant maintenance on the trailer, the severity of Minnesota weather, and Leah’s child starting Kindergarten helped Erin make the decision to move her shop to a permanent location this year. In June, she opened The Combover in Byron at 957 Frontage Road NW, Office 1 and the business has boomed since then.

Why Byron? “I hoped to keep the majority of our customers by locating between the two cities,” she said.

The two women cut hair for men and boys. Walk-ins are welcome but it is easy to make an appointment to assure you can get in. The shop’s number is (507) 328-1308 and the hours are Tuesday, 9 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Thursday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Sunday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and closed Mondays. The website to make an appointment is https://thecombover.glossgenius.com/about

Her page is https://www.facebook.com/TheCombOver21/

Stop by and visit these two vibrant, talented barbers. Their new shop is a busy, happy place to visit and to get your look spruced up.

Byron’s levy rate stays the same in preliminary budget ⚖️

At their meeting Sept. 10, Byron city council members voted unanimously to keep the levy rate the same as last year at 60.60 in the city’s preliminary budget. That doesn’t necessarily mean your taxes due in 2025 will remain the same. The value of your taxable property probably went up as property in Byron remains very desirable. That value is used to calculate your property tax.

City Finance Director Cami Reber explained, “The Tax Capacity Value of property in the City as a whole increased by 2.49% from 2023-2024. It is the 2024 values that are used for the 2025 tax calculations.”

When you receive your Proposed Tax Statement from the county later this year, you will see if and by how much your property value increased.

The council set the Truth in Taxation meeting for 6 p.m. on Dec. 10 in the Council Chambers, Byron City Hall, 680 NE Byron Main Ct. At that meeting, you may discuss the city taxes on your property with the council members.

After that hearing, council members will decide the final budget figures for 2025. The budget may decrease between now and the vote on the final budget, but it may not increase.

The city would like to thank the businesses and organizations that purchased advertising banners this year for placement on the outfield fences at the Byron Community Recreation Complex at 1650 Fourth St. NE and at Old Towne Park at 126 Byron Ave. N. This year, 22 groups purchased 29 banners.

If you’d like a banner for next year’s season, applications are available at city hall and on the city’s website. Revenue from the banners will be used to help purchase scoreboards at the fields.

Eagle Scout Project Installing Flag Poles Nears Completion 🇺🇸

Owen Scrabeck, 16, a local Eagle Scout candidate, is shown here with city workers, helping to install three flag poles near the east entrance of the Byron Community Recreation Complex at 1650 Fourth St. NE. on Aug. 21. Electrician Tom Bahr is in the bucket truck.

This installation is the final phase of his Eagle Scout project.

Owen said he decided to do the project when he was younger. “Twelve-year-old me was a little ambitious.” He set up a GoFundMe page to pay for the materials needed for the project and it is now almost finished.

Owen explained that the project is in memory of his dad, Michael, who passed away unexpectedly in November of 2022. Michael had been a big part of the project, and his death deeply affected the family.

Other building glitches also slowed the project but, Owen said, “My mom [Jessica] encouraged me to finish it up, so I am.” He will now sit before the board of review to complete his Eagle Scout qualifications.

He said he had received a lot of help from Ray Driscoll, who served as his project manager and who helped with everything. His brother, Carson, 14, and Scouts from Owen’s Troop also helped “tremendously” during the construction. He also thanked the city Public Works Department staff for their help and patience.

Political campaign, advertisement signs not permitted on public highway rights of way 🇺🇸

ST. PAUL, Minn.—With upcoming November elections, the Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds campaigners that state law prohibits placement of political or advertising signs on highway right-of-way.

These areas include driving lanes, inside and outside shoulders, ditches, sight corners at intersections, and boulevards in urban areas. It also includes displaying flags or other signs on bridges over traffic.

In addition, state law says that signs may not be placed on private land without the consent of the landowner.

Violation of Minnesota Statute 160.27 is a misdemeanor. Civil penalties may also apply if the placement of such material contributes to a motor vehicle crash, creates injury to a person, or causes damage to a motor vehicle that runs off the road.

The Minnesota Outdoor Advertising Control Act, Minnesota Statute 173.15, also prohibits placing advertising materials on public utility poles, trees and shrubs, and painting or drawing on rocks or natural features.

MnDOT workers are required to take down political or advertising signs located on the state highway right-of-way. County, city and township employees administer the laws on their roads. You can retrieve signs by contacting your local MnDOT office.

We also have additional information about signs on highway right of way online.

Beginning Construction of Basketball Half-Courts in Valley View Park 🏀

Early this year, Nate Ende and Mike Donovan of the Byron Youth Basketball Association spoke to the Byron Park Board members and the Byron City Council members about the possibility of having six half-court outdoor basketball courts built at Valley View Park. Nate explained that the association would contribute money for the equipment for the facility. They had already priced out the work and drawn up the plans. The group would like the facility to be finished in time for Good Neighbor Days, 2025 so they could host 3-on-3 tournaments.

Park Board members and city council members were all in favor of the idea and the facility was started Aug. 27. The facility will have the option to have one full court from end to end. ⛹️‍♀️

To build the courts, the outdoor volleyball courts were removed but they will be replaced elsewhere in the park, noted Public Works Director Tom Ricke. He also explained that the playground equipment at the park will be replaced in the near future, probably next year. 🏐

NEED’S Car Wash Helps Byron Vehicles Stay Clean 🚗✨

One of the first businesses in what is now the center of the East Frontage Road commercial area was NEED’S Car Wash at 509 Frontage Road. In 1995, Dave Eide and three partners built the facility during the spring/summer of that year and opened in September.

The business was there before Byron Auto Repair, Subway, Market Place, and McDonald’s, said Dave.

He explained, “I moved to Byron with my parents in 1972, then in 1994 I moved back to the Byron area with my wife and our daughters who went to Byron Schools. Interestingly, in 1995, Tenth Ave. was still a gravel road without a traffic light, [at the intersection with Highway 14] so there was very little traffic east of the Dairy Queen. Byron did not have an automatic car wash, and there was a need for larger manual wash bays.”

So, when the group designed the car wash, they decided on long bays and, “The double deep manual bays are ideal for customers with boats, trailers, snowmobiles, RV’s, etc.”

Dave has been the sole owner since 2003.

🧼 The business is open all the time, literally. You can wash your vehicle morning, noon, and night, in all weathers unless the outside temperature gets down below zero for a stretch of time.

The company offers discounted gift cards for the automatic wash to help customers save money, he said. 💧

Dave’s brother, Jeff, is a huge help with the carwash, said Dave, and they make sure the bays are up and running and ready to serve customers 24/7.

Dave reminded drivers, “In Minnesota, it’s important to keep your vehicle clean to help inhibit rust from the humidity and the salt that is spread on our roads in the winter. Help your car last longer and look good!”

🏃 A collaboration between the City of Byron and the Byron School District’s Cross Country Team generated a unique scrimmage location for a practice meet between Byron and Pine Island on Aug. 22.

Byron Cross Country Coaches Tom O’Leary, Caleb Troe, Tom Woo, and helper Jason Reeve hosted the scrimmage with runners from Byron and visiting team Pine Island at the Byron Community Recreation Complex at 1650 Fourth St. NE.

Tom Ricke, Byron Public Works Director, and Head Coach Tom O’Leary came up with the idea of having the scrimmage at BCRC. The group set up a track using orange cones around the four baseball fields, up and down the hill to the east of the parking lot and, and through the grassy area near the all-inclusive playground equipment and pavilion. They were thus able to come up with a 2.5-kilometer route for the older students to run twice for a 5 K race and a one-mile track for the younger students to use. 👟

In this photo, Coach O’Leary explains the route to the Byron students.

It was definitely a win/win, said the two men. The site has plenty of parking and restrooms available and the facility happened to be empty on a beautiful Thursday morning in late August for the scrimmage. Coach O’Leary explained that trial meets like this give athletes a chance to experience what the starting procedures would feel like, and how the students must maneuver around and through other runners. There were 110 total competitors, said O’Leary.

“We really appreciate the city partnering with us to make an event like this possible for our athletes,” he said.

: It is hard to believe, but summer is coming to an end for students across the state. With schools welcoming back students, Minnesota school buses will make about 10,000 trips each day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a school bus is one of the safest vehicles on the road for students, but we all need to work together to ensure that everyone makes it home safely.

⚫️ Stop for School Buses: It's the Law! State law requires all vehicles to stop for school buses when the bus driver activates the flashing lights and has the stop arm fully extended.
◾️ Drivers who violate the law face a $500 fine.
◾️ Drivers can face criminal charges for passing a school bus on the right, passing when a child is outside the bus, or injuring or killing a child.

⚫️ Motorists:
◾️On undivided roads, motorists traveling both directions must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus that is displaying red flashing lights and an extended stop arm.
◾️Traffic traveling the opposite direction on a divided roadway with a separating median such as a cement wall or boulevard is not required to stop.
◾️Motorists should slow down, pay attention and anticipate school children and buses, especially in neighborhoods and school zones.

⚫️ Students:
◾️When getting off a bus, look to be sure no cars are passing on the shoulder.
◾️Wait for the bus driver to signal that it’s safe to cross.
◾️When crossing the street to get on the bus or to go home, make eye contact with motorists before proceeding.
