Congratulations to FF Ashton Palmgren who is graduating today from the Rockford Fire Academy. Ashton being our newest career firefighter, started the academy at the beginning of the year. This has been a long but rewarding experience for him and we are proud of his achievements!!! Next stop for Ashton is Paramedic School, which starts later this year.

On Monday, June 1st, our organization conducted a comprehensive drill in conjunction with MABAS Division 18 Technical Rescue Team, simulating a tornado strike on a residential neighborhood. Given Illinois' distinction as the state with the highest number of tornadoes this year, this training exercise was of paramount importance.

Our teams undertook a thorough damage assessment of the neighborhood, utilizing simulations, as well as a rescue and triage component. The triage component facilitated collaboration between the Northwest Illinois Preparedness & Response Coalition and local hospitals to evaluate their resources and capabilities in response to the simulated mass casualty incident. The drill was a success, yielding valuable knowledge, key lessons, operational successes, and areas for improvement. The region is now better prepared to respond to a weather-related emergency, and we will continue to refine our operations in the coming months to provide the highest level of service to the community.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the community for their overwhelming support during the operation. One homeowner demonstrated exceptional kindness by inviting our team members into their home for coffee. Special thanks are also due to Mercy Health MD1 Physicians, Jason King for conducting drone operations, and Ogle County EMA for their participation.

Our sincere condolences go out to the Morgan Family and the members of the Harlem Roscoe Fire Department during this difficult time.

An on-duty firefighter from the Harlem-Roscoe died while on the job early Monday morning, officials said.

The fire department said firefighter-paramedic John Morgan’s death “did not occur in the line of duty, but he was at work.”

A large procession escorted Morgan’s body to the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office.

Fire Chief John Bergeron said, “Today, we mourn together. We honor a life dedicated to service. We remember a hero who answered the call without hesitation, and we pledge that their sacrifice, dedication, and legacy will never be forgotten.”

According to the fire department, “Firefighter/Paramedic Morgan dedicated his life to protecting others, answering the call for help whenever and wherever he was needed. His commitment to public service, unwavering professionalism, and compassionate care for those experiencing emergencies exemplified the highest traditions of the fire service and emergency medical profession.”

**Community Training Notice**

The Byron Fire Protection District, in partnership with the MABAS Division 18 Technical Rescue Team, will be conducting a training exercise in the Settlers Cove Subdivision on June 1, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The exercise is expected to have minimal impact on the neighborhood, and all streets will remain open to traffic. Residents may observe training signage and rescue manikins positioned along roadways as part of the exercise. Emergency response personnel will be walking throughout the subdivision conducting a simulated post-tornado damage assessment.

Motorists are asked to use caution when traveling through the area and to remain aware of personnel participating in the training.
