Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) – Public Information
Avian influenza (commonly called bird flu) is currently being monitored in wildlife across Texas. While the risk to the general public remains low, it is important to take simple precautions when encountering sick or deceased birds or wildlife.
Residents are encouraged not to handle birds or animals that appear ill or have died unexpectedly. If you find a deceased bird in your yard, coop, or nearby area, or notice multiple birds dying in one location, please report it to local animal control or wildlife officials so it can be handled appropriately.
Pet owners should prevent dogs and cats from interacting with sick or dead birds. If a pet may have had contact with a bird that appeared ill, owners should contact their veterinarian for guidance.
Individuals who believe they may have had direct contact with a sick or dead bird and have health concerns should consult their healthcare provider.
Signs of illness in birds and wildlife may include:
Unusual behavior or lack of movement
Difficulty standing, walking, or holding up the head
Tremors or seizure-like activity
Vision problems
Nasal or eye discharge
Diarrhea
Lethargy
Labored breathing
City and state agencies continue to work together to monitor wildlife health and respond as needed. The public can help by avoiding direct contact with wildlife, supervising pets outdoors, and reporting concerns to the appropriate authorities.
These simple steps help protect people, pets, and wildlife while allowing officials to respond safely and effectively.
