Fat Squirrel Week is almost here! 🎉

Our reigning squirrel, Chunk Norris, has officially retired, and we’re on the hunt for our next Fat Squirrel champion! 🏆🐿️

We need YOUR help! If you have any photos of squirrels taken here at Fort Richardson State Park, send them our way! 📸

Your squirrel could be the next finalist, and maybe even become the reigning champ of Fat Squirrel Week 2026! 👑

Possum Kingdom’s got talent! 🎤

There’s a familiar voice that’s been echoing around the park this summer… although figuring out exactly whose voice it is can be tricky.

Say hello to the “Northern Mockingbird”! 🪶

This feathered performer may look unassuming, but there’s a lot more to this familiar park resident than meets the eye.

🎶 Listen Closely: Their name gives away their specialty... they are master mimics! Northern Mockingbirds can imitate other species and sounds they encounter around them and can learn as many as 200 songs throughout their entire lives!

💪 Small Bird, Big Attitude: Don’t let the simple gray feathers fool you… they are known for being quite bold and protective of their territory, especially when raising their young.

🤠 A True Texan: The Northern Mockingbird has been the official State Bird of Texas since 1927. That’s nearly a century! Considering their adaptability, confidence, and willingness to make themselves heard, we’d say they fit right in.

Nearly 100 years as a Texas icon... and still singing its own tune! 🎵

You may have heard the phrase “Leave No Trace” before. But what exactly does it mean? 🤔

Leave No Trace is a set of 7 simple principles that help us enjoy the outdoors while protecting the places we came to enjoy in the first place.

Sounds pretty easy, right?

Well, even little things can leave a lasting impact. Walking off trail, taking home that interesting rock, feeding a curious critter, or leaving behind a tiny piece of trash might seem harmless at first… until thousands of visitors do the same thing.

So, explore. Hike. Swim. Camp. Watch the sunset. Enjoy everything that Possum Kingdom has to offer. 🌞

Just remember… the best way to show a wild place some love is to let it stay WILD! 🌿

Snow?... in August? ☀️

Well… not exactly.

If you’ve been exploring Possum Kingdom State Park lately, you may have noticed the patches of white popping up across our sunny, summer landscape. Meet Euphorbia marginata. Commonly known as snow-on-the-mountain, or ghost w**d.

FUN FACT: What looks like a cluster of big white flowers actually isn’t! 👀

Much of that snowy white color comes from bracts, which are modified leaves that surround the plants much smaller flowers. Together, they give snow-on-the-mountain its unmistakable frosted appearance.

It’s also an important late summer nectar source for bees and butterflies. 🐝🦋

Safety Note: While beautiful to look at, this is definitely a look, don’t touch kind of plant. When broken, it produces a milky white sap that can cause skin irritation, so it’s best admired right where nature planted it.

🔍Next time you spot one, take a closer look: Can you tell which parts are the actual flowers and which are leaves?

Who would have thought you could still have a snow day during a 100-degree Texas August… ❄️
