I would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help search for a missing juvenile in the Scio area.

What started as a very scary situation ended with a positive outcome, and that is because so many people stepped up to help. We had volunteers, Fire and EMS personnel, and law enforcement all working together toward the same goal.

I’m grateful for everyone who gave their time and effort today. It’s good to know that when help is needed, our communities are willing to come together and answer the call.

Today, three Harrison County dispatchers and members of the Hopedale and Cadiz Fire Departments were recognized with the Star of Life Award for their lifesaving efforts during a motorcycle accident that occurred in June 2025.

Harrison County Dispatchers Austin Anderson and Kipp Bowers expertly handled emergency communications and coordinated traffic while emergency crews responded to the scene. Dispatcher Jen Bethel, who is also a Basic EMT, was off duty but nearby when the accident occurred. During the evening hours of May 15, 2026, deputies working on U.S. Route 250 in Harrison County conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Teddy Smith Jr. of Belmont, Ohio, for an equipment violation. During the stop, Mr. Smith failed to comply with deputies’ orders, and a physical altercation ensued.

Once Mr. Smith was brought under control, deputies discovered approximately 113 grams of suspected methamphetamine in his possession.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and determined that neither the deputies nor Mr. Smith sustained any substantial injuries. Mr. Smith was transported to Harrison Community Hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Harrison County Jail.

Sheriff Mark Touville commended his deputies for their efforts in keeping dangerous drugs and violent offenders out of Harrison County.

Teddy Smith Jr. is facing charges of Obstruction of Justice, Resisting Arrest, and Aggravated Possession of Drugs, a felony of the second degree.
