🚨 SEVERE WEATHER ALERT – TODAY (April 27) 🚨

The Cahokia Heights area is under an enhanced risk for severe weather this afternoon and evening. Please take this seriously and prepare now.

⏰ TIMING:
• Storms expected to develop this afternoon
• Greatest threat window: 2 PM – 10 PM
• Peak impacts likely between 4 PM – 8 PM

⚠️ MAIN THREATS:
• 🌪️ Tornadoes possible (some could be strong)
• 🧊 Large hail (up to baseball size)
• 💨 Damaging winds (70–80+ mph)
• ⛈️ Heavy rain and dangerous lightning

These storms may develop quickly and become severe in a short amount of time.



🛑 HOW TO PREPARE NOW:
• Make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings (NOAA weather radio, phone alerts, apps)
• Identify your safe place (basement or interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows)
• Charge all devices and have flashlights ready
• Bring in or secure loose outdoor items (furniture, trash cans, etc.)
• Have a plan for kids, pets, and elderly family members
• Review what to do if a tornado warning is issued



🚒 FIRE DEPARTMENT MESSAGE:
Our crews are preparing equipment and staffing for rapid response. We ask residents to:
• Stay weather aware throughout the day
• Avoid unnecessary travel during storms
• Do not drive through flooded roadways
• Call 911 for emergencies only

🚨 SEVERE WEATHER ALERT – MONDAY AFTERNOON & EVENING 🚨

Cahokia Heights and surrounding areas need to be weather aware heading into Monday. Based on the latest updates from the National Weather Service, significant severe weather is expected.

⏰ TIMELINE:

* Overnight into Monday morning:
Storms mainly north of I-70 with large hail (up to 1”) and localized flooding possible.
* Monday Afternoon & Evening (2 PM – 10 PM):
This is the main concern window for our area.



⚠️ WHAT TO EXPECT:

* 🌪️ Tornadoes possible (some strong)
* 💨 Damaging winds up to 70+ mph
* 🧊 Very large hail (2”+ / baseball size)
* 🌧️ Heavy rain & localized flooding

Storms may start isolated and become more widespread as the evening goes on.



⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTES:

* There is some uncertainty depending on how morning storms develop, but all hazards are on the table.
* Once storms form, impacts could happen quickly with only 1–2 hours of warning time per area.



🏠 PREP NOW:

* ✔️ Identify your safe place (basement or interior room, lowest level, no windows)
* ✔️ Have multiple ways to receive alerts (phone alerts, weather radio, apps)
* ✔️ Charge phones & devices
* ✔️ Secure outdoor items (trash cans, patio furniture, etc.)
* ✔️ Review your family emergency plan



🚫 REMEMBER:

* DO NOT shelter under overpasses
* Mobile homes are NOT safe in tornadoes—have a plan to relocate
* Top floors and rooms with windows are NOT safe
