🚨 HIT AND RUN INVESTIGATION
JOWERS ROAD, WHIGHAM

The Grady County Sheriff’s Office, Whigham Police Department along with the Georgia State Patrol, are investigating a hit and run collision involving a pedestrian on Jowers Road in Whigham.

The pedestrian has been transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Our thoughts are with the individual and their family during this difficult time.

First responders and law enforcement personnel remain on scene as the investigation continues. If you are traveling in the area, please use caution, slow down, and be alert for emergency personnel and traffic restrictions.

We ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information that could assist investigators to contact Grady County 911, Grady County Sheriff’s Office or Georgia State Patrol.

Additional information will be released when it is appropriate and confirmed.

Please keep the injured individual and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

🐾 NATIONAL POLICE K9 DAY HONORING OUR FOUR LEGGED PARTNERS 🐾

Today, the Grady County Sheriff’s Office proudly recognizes National Police K9 Day and the four exceptional members of our team who serve alongside our deputies every day Abbie, Kahn, Garo, and Ares. 🐕‍🦺🇺🇸

National Police K9 Day is observed each year on September 1st to recognize and honor the service, dedication, and sacrifice of police K9s and their handlers. These remarkable animals have become an invaluable part of law enforcement, helping officers locate evidence, detect narcotics, track suspects and missing persons, and keep our communities safer.

But our K9s are more than just working partners.

They are a professional asset to our agency and a personal connection to the community. They work alongside our deputies, but they also have a way of bringing a smile to a child’s face, creating a conversation with a community member, and reminding us that law enforcement is about people and sometimes, four paws help us make that connection. ❤️

Abbie, Kahn, Garo, and Ares put their trust in their handlers, and their handlers put their trust in them. Their dedication, courage, and loyalty are something we are proud to have representing the Grady County Sheriff’s Office.

We also want to take a moment to thank our community for the continued support you show our K9s and our entire Sheriff’s Office. Your encouragement, kind words, and support mean more than you may realize.

So today, give a little extra recognition to our four-legged deputies:

🚨 DRINKING & DRIVING DON’T MIX AND TONIGHT, WE’RE WATCHING. 🚨

A traffic stop that began with equipment defects and failure to maintain lane led to an investigation that resulted in a DUI arrest. The driver was also operating without a valid driver’s license, and probable cause was established for the DUI arrest.

Accountability matters. If you choose to get behind the wheel impaired, you should expect to be held accountable for your actions.

Traffic is especially heavy tonight with High School Football taking place across our community. With more vehicles and pedestrians on the road, the potential for a tragedy increases when someone makes the irresponsible decision to drive impaired or recklessly.

Tonight, your Grady County Sheriff’s Office is out hunting impaired and reckless drivers. If you plan to drink, make the responsible decision: use a designated driver or arrange alternate transportation. Do not drive.

My priority is the safety of this community on the road and off the road.

Slow down. Stay alert. Make good decisions. Get home safely.

Autism Awareness & First Responder Training

Yesterday, members of the Grady County Sheriff’s Office completed the first session of specialized training focused on autism awareness and response.

Autism affects thousands of individuals and families across Georgia. For some individuals with autism, loud noises, flashing lights, unfamiliar surroundings, or direct communication during an emergency can be overwhelming. Understanding these differences can make a tremendous difference in how a situation is handled.

This training gives our deputies and staff a better understanding of autism and provides practical guidance for responding to emergencies or simply interacting with someone who has autism. Our goal is to recognize behaviors that may be related to autism, communicate more effectively, reduce unnecessary stress, and help keep everyone involved safe.

Our staff were also trained in the use of Carter Kits. These kits are designed to provide first responders with important information and resources to assist when interacting with individuals who may have autism or other special needs. Having this information available can help responders better understand the individual and make more informed decisions during an emergency or encounter.

This was just Session One. Session two will be taught this coming Tuesday. The Sheriff’s Office will continue conducting additional training in the near future because being prepared means being better equipped to serve every member of our community.

A special thank you to Kevin Keve for volunteering his time and knowledge to teach this important class. We appreciate your willingness to help our deputies become better first responders and better servants to our community.

As Sheriff, I believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity, patience, understanding, and respect. The more we learn, the better we can serve.

We will continue learning, training, and preparing because every member of our community matters.

SLOW DOWN ! 🌡️🚔

Folks, we know it’s HOT outside! 🥵 But let me save you some trouble, no matter how fast you drive, you’re not going to outrun the heat! 😂

Just take a look at the speed shown in the picture: 96 MPH on Georgia Highway 112. That’s not “getting there a little quicker.” That’s way too fast and leaves very little room for a mistake.

At 96 MPH, things happen FAST. A sudden obstacle, an animal crossing the road, another vehicle pulling out, or one wrong move can turn a routine drive into a catastrophic event in a matter of seconds.

Please slow down, buckle up, put the phone down, and give yourself—and everyone else on the road a chance to get home safely.

And remember: If you see something, say something. We’re all responsible for keeping Grady County safe.

Let’s look out for one another, slow down, and make it home to the people who are waiting on us. Stay safe, stay cool, and remember—there’s no destination worth risking your life to reach a few minutes faster.

🐾 PLEASE WELCOME THE GRADY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE’S NEWEST K9, ABBIE! 🐾

We are excited to introduce the newest member of the Grady County Sheriff’s Office, K9 Abbie, a specially trained scent-discriminating Bloodhound.
Abbie will be partnered with Lt. James Vick, who will serve as her handler. Lt. Vick and Abbie have recently completed their specialized training in Tallahassee and are now ready to begin serving the citizens of Grady County.
Abbie’s primary role will be assisting law enforcement in locating missing and endangered persons, including individuals who may wander from their homes or caregivers.

We are also excited to announce that the Grady County Sheriff’s Office is beginning a Scent Kit Program designed to assist families in our community who have loved ones who may be at a higher risk of wandering.

The program will allow families to maintain a scent sample that can be provided to law enforcement if their loved one goes missing. Having a properly collected scent sample available can help Abbie begin a search as quickly as possible.

This program is especially intended to help families caring for individuals who may be at an increased risk of wandering, including children and adults who may have difficulty communicating or returning home on their own.

Our goal is simple: be prepared before an emergency happens.
We are proud to add Abbie to our team and are excited about the difference she and Lt. Vick will make in our community.
