The hamlet of Cairo had a number of stores selling touristic kitsch such as this spoon. Today it is difficult to find gems such as these, but they are out there.

At one time Purling was called The Forge in a nod to its early history when there was a forge on the Shinglekill. By the late 19th century however the name was changed to Purling ostensibly as a nod to the purling noise of the streams. It was also a far more welcoming name to the burgeoning tourist industry.

Stayed an extra day in Washington, D. C. To tick off another bucket list item. A visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. It was an emotional journey. I was only able to complete one floor of the museum. It took 4 hours. I think every school age child should visit this museum.

Researching at the National Archives in Washington, D. C. It was an amazing and exciting time. The staff were amazing there. So friendly and helpful. I did a deep dive into many of the Soldier and Widow pensions from the 79th NY Highlanders from the Civil War. Five days of bliss.
