Flora Friday is back! 🌸

Today, we’re spotlighting the Red-flowered Buckwheat (eriogonum grande var. rubescens), found in both the TreePeople “Sunshine Superbloom” and “Pollinator’s Paradise” Native Garden Kit.

This compact buckwheat originated on California’s Channel Islands and has become a common landscaping plant, blooming from spring to fall. The vibrant flowers add a pop of color to native plant gardens and attract various pollinators like butterflies and bees, with seeds serving as a valuable food source for small birds. The Red-flowered Buckwheat is drought tolerant but thrives with small amounts of supplemental water during the summertime, especially in rocky or sloped areas.

Come see the Red-flowered Buckwheat in our Sustainability Garden, or pre-order a Native Garden Kit and add your very own Red-flowered Buckwheat to your garden!

Thank you to everyone who attended the Pure Water Project Las Virgenes-Triunfo First Neighborhood Information Session last Thursday!

The event provided an opportunity for nearby City of Westlake Village residents to connect with project representatives, learn more about the project, and discuss upcoming construction activities and what to expect as work progresses.

We enjoyed conversing with residents one-on-one, listening to feedback, and answering your questions!

Congratulations to Mia and Farooq Gaba for receiving the July 2026 Greenovation Award!

The LVMWD Greenovation Award recognizes outstanding customers who replaced their water-guzzling turf with beautiful, water-conscious landscapes through our Landscape Transformation Program. Winners are chosen based on 4 main criteria: aesthetics, functionality, biodiversity, and water budget impact.

Using the Turf Rebate Program, Mia transformed their plain, water-consuming backyard into a beautiful and vibrant garden, containing an assortment of different flowers, plants, and fruits, all while saving tons of water!

Happy Flora Friday! 🌾

Today's spotlight is on Brittlebush (Encelia farinosa), featured in our Sustainability Garden and the TreePeople "Sunshine Superbloom" Native Garden Kit.

This flowering shrub is known for silvery gray leaves and distinct bright yellow flowers, which attract butterflies and birds. Also referred to as Incienso, its dried sap was traditionally burned and used as incense in Mexico and early Spanish missions. Brittlebush is native to desert regions, thriving in dry conditions and shedding leaves to save water in the summer.
