COMMENDATION RECOGNITION

The Caldwell Police Department proudly recognizes Sergeant Kevin O’Neill, Officer Joseph Daniels, Officer Christopher Bernard, Officer Robert Nicoletti, and North Caldwell Sergeant Paul O’Neill for their professionalism, courage, and restraint during a high-risk incident involving a reported armed subject on April 23, 2026.

Responding officers were met with a rapidly evolving and dangerous situation. Through calm professionalism, sound tactics, teamwork, and effective communication, including overcoming a language barrier, the officers safely took the suspect into custody without injury to anyone involved.

Incidents like these highlight the dedication, discipline, and restraint our officers demonstrate in the most challenging circumstances. We are also grateful for the strong partnership we share with the North Caldwell Police Department, whose assistance was invaluable.

Please join us in congratulating these officers on their well-deserved commendation and thanking them for their commitment to protecting our community.

The Caldwell Police Department is proud to announce an upcoming transition to new navy blue uniforms, blending a modern professional appearance with respect for our department’s history and tradition.

As part of this change, you will begin seeing our officers wearing newly approved navy uniforms in the coming weeks. This transition honors our past while moving us forward with updated uniforms that are practical, professional, and reflective of today’s policing needs.

This change was not made lightly. The new uniforms were developed through the collaborative efforts of a committee made up of Caldwell Police officers from various ranks, ensuring the final design reflects both functionality and the pride of those who wear the badge every day.

While the look may be changing, our commitment to serving the Caldwell community with professionalism, integrity, and dedication remains exactly the same.

Yesterday officers were invited to Lincoln Elementary School to assist with the Annual Bike Rodeo. Officers spoke with the class on bicycle safety and making sure they wear proper fitting helmets and safety equipment. Students learned how to be alert for pedestrians and vehicles and will now be allowed to ride their bikes to school. We look forward to seeing all the students riding safely around town!

The Caldwell Police Department would like to inform you of important changes to New Jersey law regarding the use of electric bicycles (“e-bikes”). These changes, enacted under state legislation (S4834/A6235), will take full effect on July 20, 2026, following a grace period that ends on July 19, 2026.
Given the increasing popularity of e-bikes among students, it is important that families understand these new legal requirements and the potential consequences for non-compliance.
