We're seeing an increase in scam calls where someone claims you have a warrant for a failure to appear, citation, or unpaid fine- and must pay immediately to avoid arrest. These calls are fake.
Scammers are claiming to be law enforcement and using lines like - "This is Lt. Frank from the Houston County Sheriff's Office" to sound legitimate. They may leave voicemails telling you to call back "right away" or face charges.
Here's what you need to know:
My office will NEVER:
▪️Call you to demand payment for warrants or citations.
▪️ Ask for money over the phone.
▪️ Request gift cards, cash apps, wire transfers, or any form of electronic payment.
If you receive a call like this:
▪️ Hang up.
▪️ Do not send money
▪️ Do not giver personal information
▪️ Do not call the scam number back
If you're ever unsure whether something is legitimate, contact our office directly using our phone number (507)725-3379 ext. 1- not the number the caller provides.

Thank you,
Sheriff Brian Swedberg

Roughly two years ago, I held a Mental Health for Emergency Responders conference here in Winneshiek County. This was the first of its kind for NE Iowa and I was very proud to have played a role in that.

I am even happier to announce that I will once again be hosting another Mental Health for Emergency Responders seminar on Wednesday April 29, 2026, from 6 pm to 9 pm. The venue will be the auditorium inside the NICC Wilder Business Center in Calmar. The registration QR code is on the flyer.

As before, I am strongly encouraging significant others attend with their emergency responder. We all know the vital role our significant others play in our mental health well-being.

Who is an "emergency responder?" This can be anyone who is in fire, law enforcement, 911 dispatching, EMS, EMA, public works, healthcare, military, tow truck drivers, etc.

This seminar will be held to 250 people or less so do not wait to register. 3.0 EMS credits will be available for those in need.

It was great to visit with Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge and Houston County Sheriff Brian Swedberg today at the Capitol!

I appreciate all that law enforcement professionals do to help keep our communities safe.
