The Calera Fire Department received a generous donation from Martin Marietta. We have an excellent working relationship with them and all of the quarries surrounding Calera. The fire department routinely trains on site to maintain our technical rescue proficiency.

πŸ”₯🧯 City of Calera – Burn Permits & Outdoor Burning Rules 🧯πŸ”₯

πŸ“ Residents of Calera: before you begin any open burning, make sure you’re following city law and have the proper burn permit in place. Burn permits help keep our community and firefighters safe while reducing the risk of property damage or wildfires.

βœ… How to Get a Burn Permit

If you live within Calera city limits, you must obtain a burn permit from the Calera Fire Department before burning natural debris.

πŸš’ Calera Fire Department Smoke Detector Program

β€œGet Alarmed Alabama β€” Every Home Needs a Working Smoke Detector!”

As part of Fire Prevention Month, the Calera Fire Department is kicking off a special Smoke Detector Installation and Education Program!

πŸ”₯ Our Goal:
Every home in Calera should have working smoke detectors because they save lives.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’ Fire Marshal Ryan Tallie and the Calera Firefighters will be out in the community offering:

β€’ FREE smoke detector installations for qualified Calera residents
β€’ Home fire safety education, including escape planning and kitchen safety tips

πŸ“Š Why It Matters:

About 60% of home fire deaths happen in homes without working smoke alarms.

To break it down further:

38% of fatal home fires occur in homes with no smoke alarms at all.

Another 21–23% happen where alarms were present but didn’t operate.

βœ… Don’t take the risk β€” make sure your alarms work!

πŸ“± Request Your Smoke Detectors using the link below. You must complete the form to receive the smoke detectors. This is part of a program sponsored by the Alabama Fire College.

Firefighters in the great State of Alabama currently retain some of the greatest post-retirement occupational death and disability coverage in the country. This is something we rely on for us and our families in the event of a catastrophic illness or injury during or after our careers.

Unfortunately, one of the most important post-career benefits firefighters in Alabama receive could soon come to an end.

House Bill 227 (HB227), introduced and supported by Representative Russell Bedsole (R) - Shelby County, intends to reduce presumptive LODD benefits to only 15 years post-separation from the fire service.

Currently, firefighters are provided health benefits for JOB RELATED cardiac, pulmonary and cancer illnesses or death. This benefit applies from the day they retire, until the day they die. HB227 will shorten that time period drastically, and will cause younger firefighters who are able to retire in their 40’s and 50’s to feel the full effect of this downfall, and ultimately not be covered at the age that most of these job-related illnesses show up.

Local 4486 urgently asks you to contact your local State Representatives and Rep. Bedsole and voice your concerns about this matter. Firefighters in Alabama work hard day in and day out to take care of their communities. We risk our own health while serving others. Please don’t let them take our only post-career benefits away.

Local 4486 would like to congratulate Firefighter/Paramedic Ben Johnson on a great accomplishment this week by completing the Alabama Smoke Divers course. This course is a week long class that is filled with very challenging tasks both mentally and physically.

This is yet another example of the commitment and excellence that your Calera Firefighters strive to bring to the City of Calera.

Congratulations, Ben.
