Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and older adults are at higher risk due to a lifetime of sun exposure. The good news is that most skin cancers can be prevented — and they’re highly treatable when found early.

💛 What Seniors Should Know
About 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day in the U.S.

Skin cancer affects all ages and all skin tones — no one is immune.

Melanoma, the most serious type, can be deadly if not caught early.

👀 Check Your Skin Regularly
Melanoma can appear anywhere — even on areas that rarely see the sun or under a fingernail. Early detection saves lives. The AAD encourages everyone to make skin checks a lifelong habit.

🛡️ Protect Your Skin Every Day
According to dermatologists, the best protection includes:

Seeking shade between 10 AM and 2 PM

Wearing long sleeves, wide‑brimmed hats, and UV‑blocking sunglasses

Using broad‑spectrum sunscreen SPF 30+ on all exposed skin

Avoiding tanning beds — there is no such thing as a safe tan
