McLean County High School is excited to announce the hiring of our new boys basketball coach, Hayden Shelton.
Coach Shelton is a 2018 graduate of Apollo High School. He was a part of their last Regional Championship team under Steve Barker. He played two years at Brescia College before transferring to Georgetown College where he was a student assistant coach for two years. In 2023 he took an assistant coaching position at Rhodes College in Tennessee before returning to Georgetown in 2024. He has served as the head assistant coach at Georgetown for the last two years.
Throughout his 5 years as a college assistant he has accomplished the following.
118-43 (73% winning percentage)
4 National Tournament Appearances
1 Final Four, 1 Elite Eight, and 1 Sweet Sixteen
Developed 16 All-Conference Players
Developed 4 professional players (3 overseas and 1 currently in the G-League)
Coach Shelton had the following comment:
“I’m incredibly excited and honored to be the next Head Boys Basketball Coach at McLean County High School. Becoming a head coach has always been a goal of mine, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead, mentor, and build something special with the student-athletes and community here in McLean County! I’m excited to be back in the 3rd Region and can’t wait to get to work, build relationships, and represent the Cougars basketball program with pride, discipline, and passion.”
Coach Ray Harper from Jacksonville State had the following comment:
“McLean County is getting a special leader in Hayden Shelton. His experience at the college level, combined with his passion for building relationships and developing young men makes him the perfect fit for McLean County. I’m excited to see him build a program centered on pride, character, and winning the right way.”
