The Calhoun Police Department assisted in the driver’s education course which is hosted by Calhoun City Schools. This course teaches young drivers the dangers of impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and not wearing a safety belt. This is an interactive course where officers go over laws, answer questions these new drivers may have, and use impaired driving goggles to simulate the dangers of drunk driving. They finish off the class by giving each student a custom driver’s education shirt sponsored by The Calhoun Police Department.

Today we want to share with you an example of the importance of wearing a seatbelt. Every year, The Calhoun Police Department gives out a recognition award called "Saved by the Belt". This recognition is given to a driver or occupant of a vehicle who was properly wearing a seatbelt during a collision that could have resulted in serious injury or death. Ultimately the seatbelt saved the person's life. There are many examples we could think of where the use of a seatbelt prevented injury or death, but for the 2025 recognition we have chosen Tammy Sheppard.

On November 17th, 2025, Mrs. Sheppard was driving to a Dollar General in Calhoun. She came to a stop waiting for on-coming traffic to clear before attempting to turn left into the parking lot. A vehicle approaching her from the rear failed to stop and struck Mrs. Sheppard's vehicle, which then pushed her into on-coming traffic. A pickup truck approaching Mrs. Sheppard from the opposite direction then impacted her head-on. Ms. Sheppard was transported to Kennestone Hospital by life-force. After having surgery, Mrs. Sheppard was discharged about a week and a half later.

Mrs. Sheppard stated she always wears her seatbelt anywhere she goes. She also believes if she had not worn her seatbelt that night, the outcome would have been worse, and she may not be here today. We want to use this as a reminder that no matter if you are taking a quick trip down the road or cross-country, accidents happen unexpectedly and wearing your seatbelt could be the difference in making it home. Please remember to always drive safe, alert, and fastened. .

The Calhoun Police Department made a donation of infant car seats this morning to Adventhealth Labor and Delivery. There are several nurses at AdventHealth Gordon that are certified car seat technicians through the state of Georgia. These nurses then assist the parent(s) of the new born babies in the installation and inspection of the car seats to ensure the parents have a safe way of transporting their newborns safely home. 🏡💙🩷

🏡TODAY! GORDON COUNTY GOVERNMENT TO HOLD SERVICE SPOTLIGHT COMMUNITY EVENT: Gordon County Government invites residents to attend “Service Spotlight,” a free community event on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at City Park (formerly BB&T Park) located at 308 N Wall Street.

“Service Spotlight” expands on the Gordon County Tax Assessors “Hotdogs & Homesteads” event last year. This year’s event includes a wide range of local government departments and nonprofit organizations, all coming together in one place to connect with the community.

By showcasing the many services available to Gordon County residents, we are hoping to increase our outreach with the community and raise awareness of the resources, programs, and assistance available to them locally. Additionally, April 1st marks the final day for residents to file for homestead exemptions, and staff will be available onsite to assist with questions and applications.

Those who attend will have the opportunity to meet representatives, ask questions, and learn more about services from local agencies including the Calhoun Police Department, Calhoun-Gordon Library, Voluntary Action Center, AdventHealth EMS, Gordon County Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Gordon County, Recovery Gordon, Gordon County Child Advocacy Center & Sexual Assault Center, Family Resource Center of Gordon County, and various County departments.

This family-friendly event offers a unique opportunity for residents to engage directly with the people and organizations who serve the community every day.

Today we celebrate School Resource Officer Day and the incredible men and women who serve our schools with dedication, integrity, and heart.

Being a School Resource Officer is about so much more than wearing a badge on campus. It’s about building trust with students, mentoring young leaders, guiding difficult conversations, and creating a safe environment where everyone can focus on learning and growing. It’s about being a protector, a role model, and sometimes simply a steady presence on a tough day.

To all the SROs who show up early, stay late, and pour into the next generation — thank you. Your commitment to safety, your patience, and your willingness to connect with students truly make a difference. The relationships you build today shape stronger communities tomorrow.

To our Calhoun School Resource Officers, we want to say, Happy School Resource Officer Day! We appreciate all that you do. 👮‍♂️
