SCAM ALERT

The California Borough Police Department has received several complaints of fraudulent calls from someone claiming to be with the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Please know:

• Law enforcement will NEVER call and demand payment for fines, warrants, missed court dates, or jury duty.
• Law enforcement will NEVER ask for payment by gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or cash app.
• Caller ID can be faked, so a call that appears to come from a law enforcement agency may not be real.

If you get a call like this:

1. Hang up. Do not give out any personal or financial information.
2. Do not send money, no matter how urgent or threatening the caller sounds.

If you have already sent money, contact your bank right away and 911 to file a report

Please share this with family, friends, and especially older neighbors who may be targeted.

A brief training drill involving the California Area School District, Brownsville Area School District, and California University of Pennsylvania will be taking place today.

Residents may notice an increased presence of emergency personnel and vehicles in the area during the exercise.

This is only a training drill. There is no risk to the public and no reason for concern or panic.

Just a friendly reminder that California Area School District and other neighboring school districts around Western Pennsylvania will be retuning to school in the coming days! Please be cautious when you see a school bus loading in the morning or unloading in the afternoon. Our officers will be out watching and citing when necessary.

Remember

• Yellow flashing lights on the bus indicates the bus is getting ready to stop and load or unload. Slow down and get ready to stop.
• Red flashing lights and a stop signal arm indicates that the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. You must stop your vehicle at least 10 feet before reaching the school bus. You may not proceed until the flashing red signal lights are no long activated.
