Our state bird, the California Quail, shaking some feathers at the forest 😄 They like to hide out around the shrubs usually, but you might hear their call around the trails. Ironically, it sounds like a different state’s name, ‘Chi-ca-go’ 🪺 They’re so pretty!

A Douglas Fir sprouting oak leaves… what’s going on here? This is a Douglas Fir that was affected by the 2017 Tubbs Fire. It appears a woodpecker has stashed acorns all along the trunk, and they’ve actually germinated and begun to sprout! They probably won’t last too long in this growing environment, but nonetheless, very interesting. Has anyone seen this before?!
