WEEKLY COMPANY TRAINING: TECHNICAL RESCUE — TRAINING FOR THE NEXT ONE.

Our entire area has experienced significant severe weather and storm damage this summer, creating challenging and sometimes unusual emergencies.

Last week’s company training was based on a real Calumet City rescue from the June storms, when a large tree collapsed onto a home, significantly damaged the structure, and trapped a resident inside.

Crews recreated elements of that rescue using Paratech air bags, Rescue 42 struts, cribbing, and teamwork to practice stabilization, lifting, and patient access.

Our firefighters performed exceptionally that day. We train from real experiences because we intend to be ready the next time our community needs us.

Learn from the call. Train for the next one.

Sometimes training isn’t on the schedule.

Gold Shift decided to flow a little water on a Sunday morning. Nothing complicated. No formal class. Just taking some time between calls to work with our younger firefighters, pull some hose, flow water, and talk about the job.

We know the day can get busy, which makes it that much more appreciated when our experienced members choose to spend some of their downtime mentoring the next generation.

Every conversation matters. Every repetition matters. Every correction, trick of the trade, and “here’s how I do it” gets passed down and makes somebody a little better prepared for the next call.

There’s also value in knowing when to sit down, grab something to eat, and enjoy the quiet while you have it. The bell is always there, and eventually it’s going to ring.

Good work, Gold Shift. Keep passing it on.

We limit the class to 15 students for a reason. Smaller classes mean more tool time, more evolutions, and more opportunities for every student to work through the problems encountered at real-world vehicle rescue incidents.

The Calumet City Fire Department Training Division is offering our Fire Apparatus Engineer (FAE)** program in Spring and Fall 2026.

FIREMANSHIP 2026 // ENGINE CREW CLINIC

The parking will fill up.

The coffee gets poured.

The notebooks come out.

In a few days, nearly 100 firefighters from across North America will be standing on the old Sin Strip at the Peter J. Bendinelli Public Safety Training Center here in Calumet City.

They’re not coming for PowerPoint slides.

They’re coming to chase the craft.

This year the Engine Crew Clinic brings Ray McCormack, Mike Alt, and Dave Quick to Calumet City—firefighters whose lessons were earned on the fireground, not invented in a classroom.

Good instructors don’t just tell you what to do.

The great ones teach you why.

Every drill, every stretch, every mistake corrected on the training ground becomes one less mistake made on someone’s worst day.

Firemanship has grown to over 1,000 students from across North America, and we’re proud to host another stop on that journey.

The old Sin Strip is ready.

See you on the drill ground.

Train hard. Stay humble. Never stop chasing the craft.
