Copper Country Firefighters History Museum 1898 Historic Building located on the National Register of Historic Places located in Calumet, MI.

A Heritage site affiliated with the Keweenaw National Historical Park. Four Historic American LaFrance pumpers 1919 - 1950, one 1942 Ford, several hose carts and a 1857 Hand Pumper which required 12 men to operate and pull to the destination. A circa 1900 Funeral Wagon the type that was used during the funeral of the 1913 Italian Hall Tragedy. Exhibits featuring the Italian Hall Tragedy where 73 d

ied when a false alarm FIRE was announced. Working exhibits featuring the Gamewell Alarm Box system that was used by the community from the 1880's until the 1950's. Numerous other historic fire fighting apparatus displayed on two floors of the 1898 Historic Fire Station. A shoulder patch display featuring 500+ fire department shoulder patches. The Italian Hall Memorial commemorating the 1913 tragedy where 73 died on New Year's eve. The Memorial is on the same 7th Street block that Lorna and I were raised on and we attended the same nearby schools K - 12, married three years ago after getting reaquainted after a 60 year lapse.

This is an annual event in Calumet, MI remembering the 73 victims and their families of the tragedy that happened in Christmas eve in 1913.

The Italian Hall Memorial lite up on Christmas eve remembering the Christmas Eve Tragedy of 1913 when 73 persons, 59 children died in a stairway from suffocation and crushing when FIRE was yelled and there was a rush to exit the building by way the 19 step stairway that led to the outside. There was no fire, it was a FALSE ALARM.

The Museum is now open fir the season, June thru early October. Monday thru Saturday 1:00 to 4:30 pm. Contact the Museum for volunteer opportunities.
