Had one of those full-circle moments this weekend…

I had the chance to meet one of my longtime idols, Erin Gruwell. If you’ve ever seen Freedom Writers, you know her story—portrayed by Hillary Swank—the true story of a teacher who transformed the lives of at-risk students in Long Beach by giving them a voice through writing, turning a classroom divided by violence and adversity into a community of hope, resilience, and purpose.

What made it even more meaningful for me—my master’s thesis two decades ago included several quotes from Erin. To now hear her speak in person was something I won’t forget.

Her message was next level. What really hit home was how she shared the role Rotary played in supporting her students—proof that when service meets opportunity, lives change.

Grateful to the Camarillo Rotary Club for sending me to President-Elect (PELS) weekend. Three days in LA with 850+ Rotarians from across the western U.S., all focused on leadership and “Service Above Self.”

Mary Lingua from Camarillo Rotary organized Interact Students from Camarillo and Hueneme High Schools to work on the Rose Parade floats again this year. The shift was from 4-11pm. Can’t wait to see the float on Colorado Blvd during the parade !

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp happens every year in April. Young people are chosen from local high schools for their leadership potential to attend an all expenses paid camp to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary Clubs and Districts select participants and facilitate the event’s curriculum. For information, ask your school counselor or contact 805-312-5506 and see RYLA5240.org .

While we were busy promoting awareness for World Polio Day yesterday, our club turned 70 years old. Thanks to all our past and current members who put Service Above Self to make our community and the world a better place. Will you join us as we start another 70 years of service?

Part of our club's delegation to the District Conference this weekend included three of our newest members. It was a great weekend welcoming our sister districts in Mexico and Korea, learning more about Rotary and enjoying camaraderie with fellow Rotarians from our district.
