The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with 7-Eleven, Inc. in the 31st consecutive year of “Operation Chill®.” The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and 7-Eleven® want to reward local kids through the company’s community outreach program. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office looks forward to recognizing the good deeds being done by the youth in our communities.
This summer, as our deputies’ patrol neighborhoods, they will once again be keeping an eye out for youth doing great things. Some acts include; kids wearing safety helmets while riding a bike or skateboard, kids observing safety rules while crossing the street, kids participating in positive activities, kids holding the door open for someone, kids picking up trash, or kids helping someone in need. If observed, our deputies and professional staff, at any of our stations in the county, will make a positive contact with the youth and issue an Operation Chill coupon. The coupons can be redeemed for a free small Slurpee drink at any participating 7-Eleven®, Speedway®, or Stripes® store.
7-Eleven® will issue nearly 640,000 coupons to more than 1,300 participating law enforcement agencies across the country, including the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. “Operation Chill is more than just a free Slurpee drink coupon – it reinforces the power of small gestures to build big relationships,” said Marissa Jarratt, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing & Sustainability Officer at 7-Eleven, Inc.
We have a lot of great kids in our communities, and we have a lot of Slurpee coupons to hand out to keep encouraging them to become great citizens. This program allows us to continue to build trust and relationships with the communities we serve. We are better at what we do because of our community partnerships.

Memorial Weekend Recap: Traffic Stops Lead to Fi****ms and Narcotics Arrests

Camarillo Deputies conducted two separate traffic enforcement stops over the weekend that resulted in multiple arrests and the recovery of narcotics, weapons, and illegal items.

During a stop on the southbound 101 Freeway at Springville Drive for expired registration, a deputy discovered false registration tabs and a usable amount of methamphetamine. The investigation later led to the recovery of an illegally transferred firearm from a residence in Camarillo. The suspect was arrested on fi****ms, narcotics, and false registration charges.

In a separate stop near Murray Avenue and Daily Drive for mechanical violations, deputies contacted a driver with an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of approximately 30 grams of methamphetamine, a scale, an imitation handgun, and a switchblade knife. Two suspects were arrested for narcotics and weapon charges.

Great work by our deputies for their thorough investigations and attention to detail in helping keep our community safe. 👏👏

The Camarillo Police Department would like to thank La Miraposa Elementary School for inviting us to speak with your TK and kindergarten students on bicycle safety and the importance of wearing a helmet, among several other safety topics. The students had a good time seeing the different types of police vehicles and we hope they all learned something new.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office reminds travelers to always buckle up and secure children in the right car seats when visiting friends and family.

This year’s Click It or Ticket campaign runs from May 18 to 31. During this time, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office will have additional officers on patrol actively looking for drivers and passengers who are not wearing seat belts. This includes vehicles in which children are not secured in child safety seats or the appropriate safety seats for their age.

“Our priority is protecting the people in our community. Wearing a seat belt or properly securing children in car seats or a booster seat gives everyone a better chance of surviving a crash,” Sergeant Matthew Ogonowski said. “We want every trip – short or long – to end safely, so please buckle up, every time.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2023, 10,484 people killed in crashes in the U.S. were not wearing a seat belt. In California, there were 780 unrestrained people killed in crashes that same year, including 24 children. Additionally, unrestrained child fatalities in California increased by 4.3 percent from 2022 to 2023.

California law requires all children under 2 years old to ride in a rear-facing car seat, unless the child is 40 or more pounds or is 40 or more inches tall. Once a child reaches these milestones, all children under the age of 8 years are still required to be secured in a car seat or booster seat. Children under the age of 8 may not ride in the front seat unless the vehicle is not equipped with a rear, forward-facing seat. Children 8 and older, or who are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, may be secured by a booster seat, but at a minimum must be wearing a properly fitted safety belt.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to keep children in the proper rear or forward-facing seat as long as possible and use the “Five-Step Test” to determine if their child is big enough to safely use a seat belt without a booster seat.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
