In service to the Asian elephants and planet earth Voice for Asian Elephants Society bridges the gap between humans and Asian elephants and empowers shifts in perceptions in creating peaceful co-existence with each other and the elephants. We share knowledge, scientific inquiries, and deeper insights gathered from ancient wisdom and personal experiences with elephants through evocative writings, s

peaking engagements, and wilderness/ elephant experiences that nurture awe, empathy, and respect for all sentient beings, and gratitude for the abundance of gifts that the natural world continues to bestow upon humankind. Our first project is "Gods in Shackles" documentary that exposes the dark side of Kerala's glamorous cultural festivities and rituals that exploit captive elephants for profit under the guise of culture and religion, revealing the abhorrent torture these supremely gentle and intelligent animals suffer. One of the main intentions in producing this film is to create a deeper understanding of the behavior and social organization of Asian elephants, as well as their inherent abilities to feel and communicate. Using this film we aim to engage and educate key stakeholders, and equip the owners and handlers with positive reinforcement strategies that promote empathy and alleviate the pain and suffering of Kerala's captive elephants. Gods in Shackles is a feature length documentary film in the making, an exposè revealing the sordid secrets lurking beneath the glitz and glamour of Kerala's captive elephants used in festivities, and the exploitation of these supremely gentle and intelligent beings in the name of culture and religion. In this film, Sangita Iyer will take you through her personal journey that began in December 2013, when she traveled to her birthplace in Kerala, Southern India, and reconnected with her soul animals – these gentle giants. Her plan was to meet with world-renowned elephant scientists and gather research material for The Huffington Post. But after 10 days of witnessing festivities and temple rituals using male elephants inflicted with massive tumors, deep wounds, ripped ears, and even blindness, she knew that these animals needed help. After months of preparation and waiting, we are absolutely 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗗—and incredibly relieved—to share this wonderful news: 30 EleSense devices have now been fully assembled and are ready for installation! ❤️🐘

The official inauguration will take place on 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟰, followed by installation through 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟱—bringing this innovative early-warning technology to a new landscape where it can help 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 while fostering safer coexistence.

🌿🐘 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗙 𝗪𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥?

For centuries, we have placed ourselves at the centre of existence—as though the Earth and all its inhabitants were created simply for our use.

But the more we learn about the natural world, the more that illusion begins to crumble.

Elephants grieve. Animals form friendships, protect their young, communicate, remember and fear. The living world around us is not merely a collection of “resources”—it is a community of beings experiencing life alongside us.

Perhaps the awakening we desperately need begins with one profound shift:

🐘🐘🐘 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗡... 𝗔𝗡 𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗥𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗗 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗗.

In 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗡𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗿, 𝗞𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗮, a large herd of elephants is now roaming freely across the very land that Voices for Asian Elephants helped reclaim for their safe passage. To see them here—families moving together, babies among them, simply being elephants—is almost beyond words.

In 2023, VFAE, in collaboration with our grassroots partner Nature Mates Nature Club, purchased 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 that had been obstructing elephant movement, with the express purpose of returning it to the forest. And on 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟵, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, the Kerala Government formally authorized the transfer of the land to the Kerala Forest Department for rewilding and permanent protection as wildlife habitat.

Despite the seemingly insurmountable challenges along the way, on May 9, 2024, the land was officially transferred to the Kerala Forest Department—ensuring that those precious acres would forever serve the elephants they were meant to protect.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘄... 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. 🐘🐘🐘

An entire herd moving freely across this landscape is perhaps the most beautiful confirmation of why every acre matters. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘆, 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼—𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

Under the scorching Odisha sun, our incredible tribal team walks 𝟑 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬, carrying water on their shoulders to nurture these young saplings—one precious plant at a time.

They clear the earth around each sapling. They carefully water it.
They return again and again.

And look what their dedication has made possible. 🌱 Our saplings in Balasore are thriving, with some bamboo shoots now soaring 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥!

And perhaps the most beautiful sign of all? 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬. 🐘🐾

More than 𝟕𝟎 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝—returning to the very corridors we are working so hard to restore.

Can you imagine being torn away from a family you deeply love—especially as a child? 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆. Elephants form profound family bonds, remember those they love, and young elephants can endure traumatic separation and harsh training that leaves lasting emotional scars.

Now imagine our own children being taken from everything familiar—separated from their mothers, frightened, confused, and forced to obey. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁?
