Last night, during our weekly training, our volunteers practiced attacking and extinguishing vehicle fires.

Using a car generously donated by McGovern Metals, our volunteers first stripped the vehicle of plastics and other materials to safely convert it into a vehicle burn prop. The vehicle was then packed with pallets and tree branches and ignited to simulate the heat, flames, and fire behavior firefighters encounter during real car fires. Because only the metal shell of the vehicle remains, we are able to safely reuse it for future vehicle fire trainings.

Vehicle fires can grow quickly, produce intense heat, and release dangerous smoke and gases from burning components. During this training, firefighters practiced proper hose line placement, fire attack techniques, and maintaining a safe approach to the vehicle while working as a coordinated team to control and extinguish the fire.

Using this prop allows us to give our new firefighters the most realistic hands-on training possible, helping them experience what a real vehicle fire looks and feels like in a controlled environment. Trainings like this help build confidence, improve teamwork, and ensure our firefighters are prepared to respond quickly and safely when these incidents occur in our community.

These regular trainings allow our experienced volunteers to sharpen their skills while giving newer firefighters valuable real-world experience that canโ€™t be replicated in a classroom.

Camas Valley Fire is always looking for new volunteers. We now offer several new benefits for volunteers, and if you are interested in learning more or joining our team, please contact 541-445-2207.

Last Monday during our weekly training, our volunteers focused on essential fireground skills, including hose advancement, SCBA operations, forcible entry, and primary and secondary interior search. Members rotated through hands-on scenarios, practicing teamwork, communication, and situational awareness while utilizing our new volunteer-built burn building for realistic training.

Our new and existing firefighters had the opportunity to learn and strengthen these skills so they can work smoothly and efficiently when real emergencies happen. Continuous training like this helps ensure we provide the best possible service to our community.

Camas Valley Fire is always looking for new volunteer firefighters and EMS members. We offer several new benefits for volunteers, including a paid-per-call stipend, paid FireMed, and more! If youโ€™re interested in learning more or joining our team, please contact 541-445-2207. Trainings like this are just the first steps toward becoming a firefighter and helping the community in their time of need.

Camas Valley Fire Department is full of history, and our volunteers recently took a deep dive into the stories behind the vehicles that have served our community over the years.

Our volunteers have put a lot of time and energy into creating a ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ž ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ญ that showcases ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ฏ๐ž๐ก๐ข๐œ๐ฅ๐ž ๐‚๐š๐ฆ๐š๐ฌ ๐•๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฒ ๐…๐ข๐ซ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ก๐š๐ฌ ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐ก๐š๐, including our current apparatus. Some information on older vehicles may be missing, simply because that history has been lost over time, but that makes preserving what we do know even more important.

These trading cards were originally created as a ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ, ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ง ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ฆ for our volunteers. Cards are earned through training attendance, completing tasks, and participation, with the goal of collecting a full set. The cards come in different levels โ€” ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง, ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ณ๐ž, ๐’๐ข๐ฅ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ, ๐†๐จ๐ฅ๐, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ƒ๐ข๐š๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ โ€” and volunteers can trade cards with each other as they build their collections.

Because of the interest this has generated, weโ€™re excited to also share these cards with the community. This would give community members a chance to collect the cards while also learning more about the history of the vehicles that have protected Camas Valley over the years. Community members can currently get cards by:

In the future, community members may be able to get cards by:

Stopping by our recruitment tents

Attending fundraisers

Visiting the fire station when volunteers are around

And other community events

In the future, we may also create ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ค๐ฌ as a small fundraiser, but thatโ€™s still part of our future plans.

For now, enjoy a look at some of the cards and the history behind them. Weโ€™re proud of our department, our volunteers, and the legacy of service in Camas Valley

Last night, for our weekly training, our volunteers trained on drafting and water shuttling. This consisted of our pumper, Engine 4231, drafting from a drop tank and pumping that water to supply fire suppression lines.

Water was being shuttled by Tender 4260 and Engine 4230 back and forth after being filled by Engine 4232, which was drafting from a nearby creek, practicing rural water supply operations. Throughout the training, we shuttled and pumped approximately 17,000 gallons of water.

This training allowed our existing volunteers to fine-tune their skills, as well as allowed new firefighters to learn the importance of drafting and tender shuttles in rural firefighting without a dedicated water supply.

Camas Valley Fire is always looking for new volunteers. We now offer several new benefits for volunteers, and if you are interested in learning more or joining our team, please contact 541-445-2207. Trainings like this are just the beginning steps of becoming a firefighter and helping the community in their time of need.

This is another video in our series highlighting each of our apparatus, and today weโ€™re featuring a true workhorse of our fleet.

Meet ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–๐ŸŽ, our 1977 Dodge Brush Truck. Acquired over 20 years ago through an intergovernmental agreement, this rig began its service life as a U.S. Forest Service vehicle and has continued protecting Camas Valley ever since.

Brush Truck Specs & Role:
โ€ข 250 gallons of water
โ€ข Built for wildland and brush fire response
โ€ข Compact and maneuverable for tight and rugged terrain
โ€ข Despite its age, it remains one of our most reliable rigs

This truck is a perfect example of what volunteer fire departments are built on โ€” dedication, stewardship, and making the most of the resources we have. Itโ€™s maintained, staffed, and operated entirely by volunteer firefighters who train hard and respond when their neighbors need help.

These incidents spanned a wide range of emergency responses, including medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, wildland and structure fires, false alarms and controlled or illegal burn responses, as well as public service and assistance calls. The department also remained ready to support neighboring agencies through standbys and mutual aid when requested.

Collectively, Camas Valley volunteer firefighters spent more than 670 hours responding to emergency calls in 2025, giving their time selflessly at all hours and in all conditions to protect the community they serve.

In 2025, the Camas Valley Rural Volunteer Fire District maintained an average response time of approximately 9 minutes for typical emergency incidents, with half of all calls receiving a response within about 7ยฝ minutes. Additionally, approximately 36% of all emergency responses were initiated within 6 minutes of dispatch, reflecting the dedication of volunteer firefighters responding from across a rural service area.

A detailed breakdown of the 2025 calls by incident type is included in the attached images.

As we move into the new year, we want to wish everyone a happy and safe 2026.
