Retirements, Promotion, & Graduation

Please join us in congratulating several of our personnel on their recent retirement, promotion, or academy graduation!

After 50 years in the fire service, Ron Schumacher retired in January. He served as our Division Chief - Fire Marshal for 12 years and previously served our communities as Fire Marshal and Fire Chief of Washougal Fire (prior to the merger of Camas and Washougal Fire). We are grateful for his dedicated work in fire prevention/investigation and hope he enjoys his retirement!

Steve Pozsgai retired last month after over 40 years of fire and EMS service, including 29 years of service to the Cities of Camas & Washougal as a Firefighter/Paramedic. We will miss his vast experience and compassionate care for those in our communities, but we wish him the best during his well-deserved retirement!

Kevin Bergstrom was promoted to Fire Marshal from Deputy Fire Marshal in March, a position he had held since 2019. Prior to that, he served in the roles of Fire Captain and Firefighter with CWFD. Bergstrom has a bachelor’s degree in Fire Service Administration and is currently completing a master’s degree in public administration. We appreciate the work he has done and continues to do in protecting our Cities.

Earlier this year, we hired David Crawford and Michael Hill as Firefighter/Paramedics. They recently graduated from the Washington State Fire Training Academy in North Bend where they spent several months training on firefighting skills and tactics. They are now completing some additional training back at CWFD before they join our crews on shift. We’re happy to have them onboard!

Congratulations all!

On Tuesday, April 21st, firefighters assisted Georgia Pacific's Mill Emergency Response Team (MERT) in fighting a smoldering fire of wood dust and chips located about 7 stories above the ground. CWFD crews were on scene for about 3 hours before turning all operations back over to MERT for continued hazard mitigation/extinguishment. CWFD was also assisted by units from East County Fire & Rescue.

Notice: Live Fire Training Exercise

CWFD is planning to conduct a live-fire training exercise tomorrow, March 5th, from ~8am to 5pm at 305 SE 252nd Ave in Camas. Controlled training burns like this provide our firefighters with a chance to practice essential skills under more realistic conditions.

Important information:
- The exercise will be strictly controlled and monitored by crews until the site no longer poses a hazard.
- Smoke may be visible during the day.
- We will continuously monitor wind conditions to minimize the impact on the surrounding neighborhoods.
- If you live nearby, we recommend keeping windows closed during the burn.
- There is no public viewing area, please avoid the area due to safety concerns and limited access. We will post pictures from the training later.

If you have any questions of concerns, please contact the Fire Marshal's Office at 360-834-6191 or via email at [email protected].

Engine 41's Push-in Ceremony is tomorrow morning!

Prior to mechanized fire engines, firefighters responded to calls with horse-drawn engines. When crews returned to the station after a call, the horses could not be used to back the engine into the station. The engines would be disconnected from the horses’ harnesses and pushed into the station by hand.

Thus began the tradition of the engine ‘push-in’, which is a ceremony that fire departments still practice when placing a new engine in service.

Please join us for the push-in ceremony for the new Engine 41 on Thursday, December 4th, 8:00am at Station 41.

Be Safe, Be Seen on Halloween!
Being visible on or near roadways is important for firefighters and trick-or-treaters.

Safety tips for trick-or-treating:
- wear reflective tape, use glow sticks, and/or carry a flashlight for visibility
- cross at corners, use traffic signals and crosswalks
- stay on sidewalks when possible
- watch for cars turning or backing up

If you’re out driving tonight:
- slow down and stay alert, especially in neighborhoods
- pay extra attention for people that may cross the street mid-block
