Do you enjoy working with youth? Are you passionate about wildlife? Do you want to inspire the next generation of stewards? Then you should apply to be an elephant seal school group docent!

School group docents lead small groups of K-12 students through curriculum-aligned field trips at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery in Hearst San Simeon State Park. In these field trips, students observe elephant seals from the bluff and participate in hands-on activities to learn all about these amazing animals.

California State Parks, in collaboration with Friends of the Elephant Seals, provides required training to ensure that school group docents are prepared and confident in their role.

Have you seen this plant before? If so, you’ve been lucky enough to spot the Compact Cobwebby Thistle. This plant is not only native but also endemic to California - meaning it lives nowhere else in the world!

California is one of only 36 biodiversity hotspots around the globe, in part because it is home to more than 2,000 endemic plant species. The Compact Cobwebby Thistle is a reminder of the rich biodiversity that makes Hearst San Simeon State Park and California so special!
