🚑 Decades without a countywide competitive review. Isn’t it time to evaluate our options?

Our communities have grown. Technology has advanced. EMS has evolved.

Yet San Luis Obispo County has gone decades without a comprehensive countywide competitive review of ambulance service delivery.

✅ The current RFP process gives our communities an opportunity to:

• Evaluate today’s emergency medical needs.
• Explore improved technology, dispatch, and ambulance deployment.
• Compare service models, performance, and value.
• Identify opportunities to improve patient care.

📞 Why does it matter? When you or someone you love calls 911, you depend on an entire EMS system working together to deliver the right care at the right time.

The goal isn’t change for the sake of change. It’s making sure we’re providing the best possible EMS system for the communities we serve.

⚠️ CAMBRIA: POTENTIAL POWER SHUTOFF OCTOBER 15–17

PG&E has issued a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) Watch due to anticipated weather conditions and elevated wildfire risk. No shutoff has been confirmed.

Marine Terrace and Lodge Hill may be affected, along with other areas. Check your specific address on PG&E’s outage map, even if you live outside these neighborhoods. Select “Future PSPS Outages” in the map filter.

If a shutoff occurs, power could be interrupted for up to 72 hours. Prepare before Thursday:

🔹 Stock drinking water, nonperishable food, medications, and essential supplies.
🔹 Charge phones, battery packs, and rechargeable equipment.
🔹 Arrange backup power or another safe location for critical medical needs.
🔹 Keep vehicles fueled or charged.
🔹 Plan for possible interruptions to internet and phone service.
🔹 Check on neighbors who may need help.

Use generators outdoors, away from doors, windows, and vents. Never operate generators or charcoal grills inside homes, garages, or enclosed spaces.

If a shutoff occurs, PG&E expects to open a local Community Resource Center. Its location and hours have not yet been announced.

Cambria Fire and CCSD are coordinating with County emergency officials and PG&E and will share updates as information becomes available.

Cambria Fire participated in the annual Burn Relay, joining Central Coast firefighters to share fire prevention and safety lessons with local students. We also presented a $1,000 donation to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation to support its work.

During a separate visit to Cambria Grammar School, firefighters read Lou by Breanna Carzoo, answered students’ questions, and gave them a chance to try on firefighter helmets and gear.

We’re proud to help students learn, build trust, and get to know their local firefighters. Thank you to our school staff and community partners for welcoming us!

🌧️ Prepare Before the Rain: Sandbag Tips & Locations

Cambria Fire Department encourages residents to prepare now for winter storms. Free sand is available to Cambria residents to help prepare for potential flooding and erosion at:

📍 2021 Rodeo Grounds Road
📍 Lampton Park, at the corner of Lampton and Windsor

Bring your own shovel and bags or containers to transport sand. Tractors are not permitted at District sand sites. Sandbags are not available at Cambria Fire Department but may be purchased at local hardware stores.

Tips for placing sandbags:

• Fill bags about ⅔ full so they can flatten and fit snugly together.
• Fold the open end underneath each bag.
• Stagger bags like bricks, compact each layer, and build a wide base for stability.
• Leave space between the barrier and your home to manage seepage.

Swipe through the graphics for more tips! Sandbags can help reduce water intrusion, but they do not make your home floodproof. Prepare early—before the rain arrives.

🌧️ PREPARING FOR EL NIÑO 🌊

A strong El Niño is developing in the Pacific, which could bring periods of heavy rain, strong winds, high surf, flooding, power outages, and hazardous driving conditions to the Central Coast this winter. While El Niño does not guarantee that every storm will directly affect Cambria, now is the time to prepare, not when the rain begins.

Cambria Fire Department encourages residents to take a few simple steps before the wet season:

• Clear leaves and debris from gutters, drains, and areas where water collects
• Inspect roofs and address leaks before the first major storm
• Secure outdoor furniture and other loose items
• Prepare sandbags if your property is prone to flooding
• Keep flashlights, batteries, medications, food, and water readily available
• Charge phones and portable power banks before storms arrive
• Avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather
• Never drive, walk, or bike through flooded roads—Turn Around, Don’t Drown
• Stay away from cliffs, beaches, rocks, and coastal areas during high-surf conditions
• Monitor official weather forecasts, emergency alerts, and road closures

Preparing early can help protect your family, home, and property while allowing emergency responders to focus on the most critical incidents.

Today, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001—including 343 FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while answering the call to help others.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor the courage of the first responders, military members, emergency personnel, and everyday citizens who acted with extraordinary bravery and compassion. We also remember those who have since lost their lives or continue to suffer from illnesses connected to the rescue and recovery efforts.

For the American fire service, September 11 is a lasting reminder of the commitment we make to serve others—even in the face of uncertainty and tremendous danger.

Cambria Fire Department proudly remembers all who were lost, those who responded, and the families whose lives were forever changed.

May we honor their legacy through service, unity, and kindness.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Cambria Fire was pleased to welcome members of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach for a station visit focused on strengthening our working relationship.

These Coast Guard professionals receive maritime distress calls and coordinate the appropriate resources for ocean-related emergencies. Building strong partnerships and maintaining clear communication help ensure our agencies are prepared to work together when every second counts.

September is Emergency Preparedness Month! 🚨

During periods of extreme fire danger, PG&E may temporarily turn off power through a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) to help reduce wildfire risk.

Take a few minutes now to prepare:

🔦 Keep working flashlights and fresh batteries accessible
🔋 Charge portable power banks and safely test generators
📻 Check your battery-powered or hand-crank radio
💊 Plan for refrigerated medications, medical equipment, and other essential needs
📱 Update your contact information with PG&E to receive outage notifications

Generators must always be operated outdoors and away from doors, windows, and other openings to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
