His advocacy led to historic changes in U.S. law, but it was the courage of Black WWII veterans like Medgar Evers that helped lay the groundwork. After facing discrimination upon returning home from war, their resolve and fight for justice helped influence pivotal decisions, including President Truman’s 1948 desegregation of the military. The 67th Evacuation Hospital played a crucial role during WWII, offering emergency care to thousands of soldiers. Activated in 1942, the unit trained relentlessly under challenging conditions, quickly becoming a vital part of the war effort. In 1944, they treated over 4,600 patients, performing hundreds of surgeries despite intense conditions. After multiple deployments across Europe, the hospital closed in November 1945 and its personnel made their way back to the U.S., with the unit officially deactivating in January 1946.
