Press Release from Mayor Lajan Cephas Bey. Please continue to pray for Mayor Cephas-Bey as she takes a moment to rest and welcome a full and speedy recovery. Rest assure during her absence, The City of Cambridge City Council will continue to conduct the city's business with at the forefront of what we do. While many of you have direct access to the Mayor I ask that you respect her privacy during this time of healing and recovery. For city business please feel free to contact The Mayor's office at 410-228-3820, City Hall at 410.228.4020 or email me directly at [email protected].

In order to have a better City, we must first take care of ourselves personally. I owe it to myself, my husband Joe, and my family to take this time to rest and heal following my medical procedure last week.

I do plan to share more details regarding my procedure at a later time, but for now, I respectfully ask for privacy as I focus on my recovery. I’ll be back in a few weeks.

I sincerely appreciate the prayers, grace, patience, and understanding extended to me by residents, City staff, my colleagues, and the Cambridge community during this time.

Remember, I love yall. There’s nothing you can do about it and that’s the way it is. ❤️

I want to take a moment to address the conversation surrounding the Train Garden.

First and foremost — I support the Train Garden. Its 91-year history, its legacy, and the memories it has created for generations of Cambridge families are invaluable. It is truly part of the fabric of our community.

At the same time, I hear the concerns of the community. I also hear the concerns raised by the City Manager regarding the current condition of the building occupied by the Train Garden — including reports of asbestos and the lack of running water, no public restrooms. Learning that these conditions may not be safe raises serious health and safety concerns that we cannot ignore.

Do I believe this topic warrants additional conversation? Absolutely.

To be clear, the Council has not made any formal decision to end agreements, nor has any formal notice to vacate been issued. No final action has been taken.

It is imperative that we listen to staff and qualified experts regarding building safety and structural conditions. Their professional recommendations matter.

I believe the history and legacy of the Train Garden are extremely valuable. I also believe the health, safety, and wellbeing of the volunteers, families, and supporters who participate in it are equally valuable.

As a City, we must strongly and equally consider both.

This requires transparency, collaboration, and good-faith dialogue. I remain committed to working toward a responsible solution that honors this historic tradition while ensuring safety for everyone involved.

Let’s continue the conversation — respectfully and thoughtfully.

It was a wonderful day in Annapolis on Wednesday to kick off the 449th Legislative Session for the Maryland General Assembly. Although we’re aware challenges may arise we are yet hopeful with the solid representation for District 37. It’s always good to meet new people, make broader connections, and see old friends and colleagues.

Rest In Peace Tim! I am deeply saddened by this great loss! You’ve served well! Take your rest!

It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that Rescue Fire Company announces the passing of Treasurer Tim McCarter, a long-time and dedicated member of our department.

Treasurer McCarter served RFC with unwavering commitment, integrity, and pride for many years. Throughout his tenure, Tim exemplified what it means to be professional—selfless in service, steadfast in responsibility, and deeply devoted to the members and mission of this department. His leadership as Treasurer helped guide and strengthen our organization, and his dedication left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to serve alongside him.

Tim was a trusted colleague, a mentor to many, a true friend of many wise words, but most of all he was a Husband, a Father and Grandfather within our own department. His presence will be deeply missed within our lives.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We stand with them in mourning and gratitude for a life of service so generously given to not only RFC but the entire community.

Further information regarding funeral arrangements and memorial services will be shared as it becomes available.

Rest easy, your service and legacy will never be forgotten!

Today, I had the privilege of welcoming and participating in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Zaxby’s. The energy was incredible, and from the turnout alone, it’s clear the City of Cambridge already loves and supports them. Excited to see this new addition thrive in our community.
