I want to take a moment to address the conversation surrounding the Train Garden.
First and foremost — I support the Train Garden. Its 91-year history, its legacy, and the memories it has created for generations of Cambridge families are invaluable. It is truly part of the fabric of our community.
At the same time, I hear the concerns of the community. I also hear the concerns raised by the City Manager regarding the current condition of the building occupied by the Train Garden — including reports of asbestos and the lack of running water, no public restrooms. Learning that these conditions may not be safe raises serious health and safety concerns that we cannot ignore.
Do I believe this topic warrants additional conversation? Absolutely.
To be clear, the Council has not made any formal decision to end agreements, nor has any formal notice to vacate been issued. No final action has been taken.
It is imperative that we listen to staff and qualified experts regarding building safety and structural conditions. Their professional recommendations matter.
I believe the history and legacy of the Train Garden are extremely valuable. I also believe the health, safety, and wellbeing of the volunteers, families, and supporters who participate in it are equally valuable.
As a City, we must strongly and equally consider both.
This requires transparency, collaboration, and good-faith dialogue. I remain committed to working toward a responsible solution that honors this historic tradition while ensuring safety for everyone involved.
Let’s continue the conversation — respectfully and thoughtfully.
