Hey everyone, it's been a while. I just did a hand guard swap for a brother and it looks good with that shorty stock. Originally had a Surfire M500 hand guard and now it has this nice triangle hand guard. Sweet little KISS setup.

Sunken Island is looking for interest in a basic handgun or rifle course before the snows of VT set in. Let us know... Maybe something in early Nov. See you at the range and remember stay frosty and check six!

Accuracy VS. Speed

Accuracy without speed can still be handy. Speed without accuracy...in my opinion...useless. Granted there are always exceptions to every rule. But you can learn to be faster once you have mastered accuracy. So my recommendation is to learn to hit what you are aiming at, before you worry about being fast. I don't know how many times I've gone to a range and have seen some "Wannabe" try to impress people by emptying a 10-15 round magazine as fast as they can pull the trigger, and scatter a few hits on a standard silouette target. I don't have much regard for those folks. I'm more impressed by someone who methodically puts hit after hit in the 5 ring. That is one of the factors that made "Wild" Bill Hickok so deadly. When the s**t hits the proverbial fan, those people are more likely to fall back on their training and make shots count. So learn to shoot accurately and then gradually work on speeding things up. The more you shoot, you will naturally find yourself getting faster. Familarity with the weapon you are using is a huge factor in speeding things up. We can help with all of this here at Sunken Island. So drop us a line if you want to work on something, or learn something new.

What handgun is best for you?
There are many factors to take into consideration when choosing a handgun. Cost, application, availability of parts and accessories, safety, environment, and…not the least of which is YOU. If you haven’t been properly trained on the use of handguns, I highly discourage you from buying one, unless you plan on receiving that training ASAP. That being said, here are some of the things you should consider before buying your handgun.
Caliber-What caliber should you look for? I covered this topic in an earlier post. However here are some of the considerations for choosing a caliber. Calibers range from .17 on up to .68 with hundreds of variations in between. I will simplify things by only discussing 5, the .22, .38, 9mm, .40, and .45 are the most popular calibers for handguns these days. So which one? Well…that depends on what you plan on using your handgun for. For home defense, I would not recommend the .22 caliber, or the 9mm. This may surprise most people as those are probably the most popular home defense handguns. I’ll tell you why I don’t recommend these two calibers, and I can sum it up in one word. Pe*******on. The .22 has more PENETRATING power than the .45 caliber due to the high velocity of these rounds. Surprising isn’t it. The same can be said for the 9mm. If you are firing a weapon in your house (unless the walls are made of brick) you probably don’t want an errant round going through a wall and potentially hitting something or someone other than the badguy. I would instead recommend a relatively low velocity round like the .38 or the .45. However, if you are carrying a handgun for defense in your vehicle, penetrating power could be a plus as you may have to fire through glass and various parts of a vehicle. I could go on and on, but this gives you food for thought.
Cost- What do you spend on your handgun? This depends on what you can afford obviously. More expensive doesn’t always mean better. There are many affordable and reliable handguns out there in whatever caliber you need. Don’t go out and buy the most expensive and think you are better protected because of it.
Size- What size is best for me? This depends on your hand-size and what purpose you plan on using the handgun for. For concealed carry/self-defense, smaller is generally better. For bigger people it is easier to conceal a larger handgun. Smaller people will have a hard time concealing a full-size handgun on their person. For home defense, concealment isn’t really a concern, so a full-size handgun might be a better choice.
YOU- What handgun can YOU handle confidently? That depends on your level of confidence and proficiency. I would not recommend a single-action, semi-automatic, handgun to a beginner. For first time gunowners, I would recommend a revolver or double-action semi-auto. I wouldn’t recommend a single-action semi-auto to anyone, but a highly trained and proficient shooter.
So, in closing…there are many factors to consider when you are thinking of buying your handgun. We can help provide answers for you as well as recommendations here at Sunken Island. Not to mention we can provide you the training you need to become proficient with what-ever you choose. Our instructors have well over 100 years of cumulative experience, as well as actual combat experience. If you have any questions, feel free to post them here or send us a message!

What is the best caliber for handgun self-defense? Here is my answer... To me there is no single 'magic' self-defense round. My personal preference is the .45 acp in my 1911...however, I'd feel just as comfortable with a .22 pocket gun depending on the situation. Yeah, that's right. I know that if I have to use my handgun to protect myself or others, I can do so no matter what caliber I carry. I know when I press that trigger, my rounds will hit what I'm aiming at. It comes from a combination of practice, proper instruction, and a combat mindset. Just carrying a hand-cannon won't guarantee you coming out on top in a gunfight. We here at Sunken Island can give you the tools you need to effectively defend yourself should you ever have to. So drop us a line if you are interested in taking a class or two.

Thanks to everyone for a great gathering last weekend. We will continue to enhance our Programs through your feedback and AAR comments. Hope to see some new faces and our loyal return customers at our next class. We are looking to hold intro to the long gun in the next month. In addition we are finalizing our advanced programs schedule. Expect to see two new offerings in short order. The first is our "unconventional weapons defensive course"; in this program you will learn solid defensive skills using weapons systems that are not the typical ones seen at a fi****ms class of this level. Have a single shot shotgun or .22 at home? Well learn how to best defend yourself, your loved ones and your home with it! This is the one place where you will hear the staff encourage you to bring your muzzleloaders, single-shots,etc to class. Secondly we will be holding our CQD and Signature Reductions programs soon. These are for our clients who travel a lot or who are at risk of abduction, either in the US or Overseas. Lastly, keep an eye open for our newest feature... The SI/TAD wenches! You got it... Gorgeous girls in full kit sporting some of the custom weapons systems you may see at our programs! So stay tuned, and remember "Check Six"!!

Direct impingement or gas piston ARs? Which should you get? While DI has been around since the beginning and works fine it does require a little more maintenance to function properly. Piston drive is a little less on the maintenance end but adds a little more weight to the system. So, which weapon system should you get? It's up to you on how much time you want to spend cleaning or a little extra weight. I have both systems and I find myself running my piston drive more.
